What I meant was that I don't want to see them make her some sort of sympathetic figure. Like Aurora's parents mistreated her or something like that and that's why she became evil. Maleficent is the mistress of all evil. We should want to cheer when Phillip throws the sword and kills the dragon, not feel sad that the poor mistreated Maleficent died.

Sadly it appears what you may want isn't what's going to happen. This is the synopsis. {Spoiler}From Tribute Entertainment "Maleficent, the evil fairy who cursed Princess Aurora in Sleeping Beauty. Was once a pure hearted beautiful woman living an idyllic life growing up in the peacable forest kingdom. One day an invadaing army of humans threatened the land where she lived. Maleficent proves to be a fierce proctector.
When she's ruthlessly betrayed. Her pure heart turns to stone. Wanting revenge. Maleficent decides to place a curse on Aurora. The infant newborn of the human king. But as the child grows up. Maleficent realizes that Auroa may be the only chance for peace."

I saw this before Frozen too and I agree there is so much potential with a story like this. And I wholeheartedly agree that I don't want a backstory for her, but going from Silver's post, I think I'm just going to completely disassociate the two movies from each other. There's no reason why I should enjoy this because I have a problem of the connection with the two lol.

Bad news indeed. If you're even going to attempt to make Maleficent sympathetic, do not do so by making Aurora's parents the apparent villains in the story.
What next? Cruella De Vil wants a fur coat made out of dalmatian puppies because a dalmatian once bit her?

I don't know if this was intentional or not, but I did read somewhere they were making a Cruella movie...

Hmmmm... I can't watch that without Glenn Close. She was such a wonderful Cruella! ^^

My comment was a reference to the rumored Cruella De Vil movie. And Arielle has also summed up part of why I wish this Maleficent movie wasn't happening. Animator Marc Davis and voice actress Eleanor Audley already gave us a chilling villainess in Maleficent.

Am I the only one who didn't realize this comes out on May 14th? O.o Or have I not been paying attention? I took a quick glance over the prior posts... maybe I glanced too fast.
For some reason, I thought this film was father away from being out than it is!

As much as part of me would love to see a well done live action adaptation mostly for the dragon fight at the end, I don't think this movie will be what I want it to be.
This trailer makes it perfectly clear that they think this is a live action adaptation of Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty. Accordingly, I expect to see the Mistress of All Evil in this film, not some misunderstood sorceress who was wronged by Aurora's parents.

Do not like the editing in this trailer. I think the teaser did a better job at capturing the synopsis.
This remains in my "wait and see" category.

Thank you Cassie. The new trailer serves the synopsis better. I'm considering this now. Puttting everything I know and love about Sleeping Beauty aside. I've become less critical on the orgin and will judge it for what it is. I just really hope the performances match the hype. One of the crucial performances practically ruined my expereince with Snow White and the Huntsman. I hope Disney got it right.
