*Blinks* REALLY? I mean... reeeeally? =/ That's a bit lame. Do they not have ANY other ideas? We already have wicked, the idea's done already.. Come ON disney! xD Ok sure, it could be cool seeing everything in a different light but it's just a bit... I dunno.. Maleficent was the bad-guy and making it justified and giving reasons to it will, in my opinion, could damage the original sleeping beauty. I can't watch the Wizard of Oz any more since reading Wicked due to my huge dislike for Dorothy now, it could do that to sleeping beauty too D8
Here's hoping it is just a rumor to be honest. No doubt it would be an *amazing* Tim Burton thing, like *all* his other stuff, but come oooooon...
** The *'s are because it seems that Tim Burton's style is growing old on me now. It's good, but he should do something new already.

I love Tim Burton. I love Maleficent. Together? Blarg. It was one thing to see Wicked and look at her as a human, because you kinda felt like there was some sort of back story with the Wicked Witch in the Wizard of Oz, although not really as human. But I can't see Maleficent human at all nor do I want to. To me, she is the ultimate Disney Villain and I don't want anything to really change that. Besides, they kinda do give the reason that she wasn't invited to Aurora's birthday party and that was the reason for her curse. Maybe it'll explain how she became a bad fairy compared to the three good fairies? I'm kinda hoping this stays rumor.

Agreed, as much as I love Burton, I really don't want this to come about and like you said Kairi, it does sound a bit of a ripoff of Wicked.
The article does say to file it under "rumour" at the moment, so hopefully that's all it is.

This had better stay a rumor! Mr.Burton already took the liberty of butchering my beloved Sweeney Todd. Wasn't that enough? I think he is talented, but he's also incredibly repetitive. Plus like everybody else has said. This would just seem like a rip-off of the beautiful story of Wicked. And to create sort of prequel Sleeping Beauty is like asking to get your own swat team to protect you. I can't believe he'd really be the cocky and full of himself.

This has trouble written all over it. Leave well enough alone and stop exploiting the classics to make more money. If they're not careful, the classics will be lumped in with the cheapquels. I saw something about this a while back, but it sounded more like a direct to DVD type project. Either way, I think it's a bad idea.

According to all the major film sites which mostly entail the earliest entires for films going into development. I thankfully can't find the slightest trace to what would be evidence to this rumor. Nothing of Tim Burton or Disney's filmography says anything in regards to this project. So hopefully this implies the rumor is nothing more then a misunderstanding.

I'm afraid I have bad news. The Walt Disney Company actually registered domain names for a Maleficent movie. While this does not mean that this project is a done deal, it does mean that Disney is looking at something. Who knows how far along this idea is or what exactly it entails? Scroll down to the bottom of the link below for what Disney has done in regards to this. Again, they've only registered domain names, but there has been and may still be something afoot. Jim Hill Media on Maleficent MovieMaybe if the upcoming live action Sorcerer's Apprentice flops, they'll rethink this idea.

I'm not sure who this person spoke to at the Disney Company, but whoever it is needs a good wake-up call. If they're honestly considering this, then they're just begging to have fans boycott their material. It never fails to shock me when a person who was hired into the film industry, has a terrible idea and the big-headed executives believe it could make money and a decent amount of feedback. What's worse is when people actually respond to it. (Need I mention Transformers) Somebody please lightly smack these people on the head and bring them back to reality.

Exactly. What makes this especially troubling is that this sort of project is messing with a classic. If they go through with this in any way, shape, or form, there will be a backlash.

gah I think this is the worst idea I have ever heard! I really can't stand most of Tim Burton's work since it is all the same! All the same people.. it is so repetitive and i don't like it. I agree with everyone and I think this would not only flop really hard, but also pull down one of the most beloved classics with it! How could anyone say yes to this?!

I agree very much with your comment about Tim Burton Alexis! ^^
While I'm all for examining characters to make them 3-dimensonal. It must depend on what the circumstance is. This idea worked well for Wicked because the characters from the original Wizard of Oz wern't fleshed out. There was room to create more color, texture, and perspective. The context of that story was also written in a very unexplained manner. So there was a plausible position to twist Elphaba's story and make her a victim and villian.
This will not work for Disney's Sleeping Beauty as it is clearly esablished in the text who is good and evil. It isd even written and stated in the dialougue that Maleficent enjoys being evil. The quotes most evident to this is when she refers directly to herself proudly. The first is after she zaps her minions for their mistake of searching for a baby. "Oh they're hopeless. A disgrace to the forces of evil." The other famous remark is right after she reveals to the fairies Princess Aurora's body. "You poor simple fools. Thinking you could defeat me. Me! The mistress of all "evil". Well here's your precious princess!" Then she vanishes in laughter at her proud display of succeeding. To create a story that makes her sympathetic would be an enormous contridiction to her character. The Wicked Witch of the West didn't have this clairification so there was a liberty to open doors for her.

This is.......Interesting. However, just like the idea of a sequel to The Hangover, how exactly would this be able to work?
