Yea... I loved Twilight, but Kristen Stewart ruined SW and the Huntsman for me. Angelina Jolie usually does great performances. So I'm really hoping she wont let me down. And to be honest, I'm not a huge fan of Sleeping Beauty. So I'm hoping that this puts it in a new perspective for me.

Because I love the story so much, I think a live action adaptation has so much potential. But I am concerned of lines like "You know the tale. Now learn the truth." They're clearly establishing a connection to their 1959 animated film. For that reason, in order for me to see this, I need to be convinced that they are not contradicting the original film. Expand Maleficent's backstory? Fine. Explain how she became the Mistress of All Evil. Fine. But do not do both of those things at the expense of making characters that were heretofore "good guys" into bad guys. If they want to make a prior kingdom with little or no connection to King Stefan responsible, I can live with that. Obviously, they've already decided how to tell their story. The filmmakers already know whether or not they truly respected the original source material in more than just visuals. But none of this obliges me or any other Disney fan to see the movie.
I'm not writing this movie off. I just don't want to see a Disney released movie that alters in a radical way one of the company's most beloved classics.

If a different actress had been chosen. I might have loved it. I thought Charlize Theron was briliant as the Evil Queen. Anyway back to the topic at hand. I confess I'm not an Angelina fan. I didnt' care for her performance in The Changeling. However she really impressed me with Salt. So far I like the vibe I'm getting from her in this. That's important since this is her story. Her tone and her eyes display so much. Yet she's regal and in control for her facial expressions and body language. Those are good acting chops. Hopefully it will be even better when I view it. Fingers are crossed.

There was a trailer for this film in 'Frozen' but there wasn't enough detail to even suggest what the story would be but that wasn't necessary for me to be concerned about the casting of Angelina Jolie as Malificent. Perhaps this is inappropriate given that I am not too familiar with her but isn't she more of an action film actress? I just don't really get a Villain vibe from her especially when in this case we are talking about possibly Disney's most ultimate Villain. It just seems like a puzzling choice is all. Personally I think Susan Serandon would make an excellent Malificent seeing as she already brilliantly nailed a portion of the role in 'Enchanted'. Seeing a few of the comments having scanned some of this thread I'd like to make clear that if this does turn out to be a Wicked type film I will not be interested. Not only would it be Disney's lowest move but it doesn't seem like a fit for Malificant. No judgement shall pass yet, it's too early. Yea... I loved Twilight, but Kristen Stewart ruined SW and the Huntsman for me. Agreed, Stewart was as emotionally impaired in Huntsman as she was in Twilight. How the hell she ever made it as actress is beyond me. In fact according to my mother critics even said both she AND the queen had been poorly cast. Shame because the story had massive potential.

For those contemplating the "Wicked" similarities. It's no secret anymore that this film will share certain traits.
I understand why many would wish to avoid it considering the charatcer's famous history. However this is what will happen for those wondering what the deal is. Disney executves and Angelina Jolie have confirmed that this will show Maleficent as a "grey-area" villain.
For those who only wish to see her as pure evil. I will tell you now (and I haven't even seen it) this is not how the story will portray her. So if you really don't wish to view her as anything else. My advice is avoid ths like the plague. You'll only leave the theatre in disappointment.

That's what I was afraid of. I could live with it being some distant past event that turned her evil, but what I'm seeing says otherwise.
As for Snow White and the Huntsman, one critic wondered what planet anyone could have been on when they claimed that Kristin Stewart was fairer than Charlize Theron. I enjoyed that film, but it really could have been something special.

Thank you very much for the new trailer Ari. I'm becoming incredibly fascinated by how this new adapation will unfold. Looks promising based on my instincts with this new trailer. Let's hope it does indeed live upto the hype.

Be interested to see how this ultimately comes out. Reviews are mixed, though the positive ones are not glowing while the negative ones are brutal.
I'm still undecided about seeing it. Part of me wants to see the visual experience this is supposed to be. But even the good reviews re troubling given my concerns over this film in the first place.

As this is now in theaters, I have locked this thread and have opened up a new one in the Theatre section.
