BRP- Where would you like me to tell about Linda Woolverton's diasassociation with The Lion King? I'm not sure this thread would be the proper place to discuss it in detail.
I personally do believe it is possible to create wonderful remakes, sequels, and other ventures out of iconic published stories. However the story must be appropriate to do so. As we've all pretty much agreed Disney's Sleeping Beauty is not a intelligent choice to sprout new ideas around. Espcially with trying to rewrite the text so it makes Maleficent the victim. It just wouldn't do the original story any justice or pay any positive attributes. Like I said in my last post, The Wizard of Oz was a plausible oppertunity to take advantage of twisting the original story around. It works because it's not as serious in tone and was left with many gap holes. Wicked is now a respectable and beloeved story because it compliments and expands the original concept. This new project with Maleficent doesn't have these qualities. I mean why the heck is Disney butchering their own studio? I should be inloved with showbusiness before some these "Poor excuse to be called filmmakers". And I'm not that intelligent, but least I have common sense.

I'm actually very curious of why Linda Woolverton doesn't want to be associated with The Lion King too. Maybe you could make another thread explaining why?

I agree that you can make sequels and retellings of classic stories. Indeed, the Walt Disney Studios are built on just that sort of idea since many of their most beloved stories are retellings of classic stories. However, in this case it simply looks like a grab for money. It's as if executives were sitting in a room trying to decide what franchise and/or character they could exploit to make money off of.
Again, I'm not opposed to sequels. I love The Empire Strikes Back. I can't wait for Toy Story 3. But in those cases, the filmmakers were looking to expand upon a story and world that they created. This one looks like Disney still hasn't figured out why Walt was successful and why the company has had some disastrous films recently.

I read in People magazine that Angeline Jolie was rumored to play Maleficent I'm sure this isn't true but I just found it really funny.

While nothing has been confirmed by Disney or Angelina Jolie. Rumors are starting to become louder and more frequent this is going to happen. Another major rumor is Disney is waiting til after Angelina promotes her newest film In the Land of Blood and Honey (A violent war film) to make the announcement.
I hoping with all my might it's not true! Angelina needs to stay away from Disney. While Disney needs to stay away from this idea.

I'm sorry but this just sounds like a bad idea. Like others have said, it sounds like a rip-off of Wicked. If this comes true I might rent it, but I wouldn't be seeing it in theaters.

If this was animated then I would have been interested, but seeing as it is live action then I don't think I will see it.
I did not see the live action Alice in Wonderland either.

Is it wrong for me to hope that they shut down production on this?
Maleficent is Marc Davis and Woolie Reitherman's animation with Eleanor Audley's voice. Those are very large shoes to fill.

Nothing is wrong with a little hope. However it's worth suggesting to not hold your breath for too long. After the finacial success of Alice in Wonderland & Snow White and the Huntsman, Disney is more determined then ever to this through. Despite the fact that the films just metioned only recieved mixed reviews at best. From both critics and audiences.
As I've mentioned before. I've never been an Angelina Jolie fan. If Maleficent had been cast by someone I liked or an unknown. Maybe I'd be more open to it. The casting of Elle Fanning as Aurora is downright pathetic! Aurora may only be sixteen but she has the physical appearence of a woman in her mid-twenties. Stage actress Anna O'byrne not only has the physical beauty to ressemble her, she has the vocals to match. Coincidently she has the same range and timbre Mary Costa had. Wonderful actress too.

I liked Snow White and the Huntsman, but I understand the criticisms. It's visually spectacular but could have used more plot development after Snow White escapes. But I think this is a very different entity. Snow White and the Huntsman used the original story as a basis, but went in a new direction.
And even if they get the story right without screwing up the version Walt Disney already told quite well, they're running huge risks. One casting misstep and it's all over. And I think they've done that.

It would take a global disaster to stop this production now. There are already pictures of Angelina Jolie filming in costume in England. I hate to say it but it is going to happen whether we like it or not.
