After the underperformance of The Princess and the Frog, I think Disney animation is in desperate need of a huge hit. And frankly, they've released movies that could have been hits. Bolt was quite good. The Princess and the Frog is at least on par with older films that did better at the box office. I think the problem, at least with the fairy tale stories, is that the audience perceives that the films are aimed only at girls, as if they're big screen versions of the latest direct to DVD Barbie project from Mattel.

I won't deny that money provides more oppertunity. However that can have it's own sense of contridiction. Just because a film is a blockbuster hit doesn't mean it will register as a classic. Nor does it deserve it. Even if The Princess and the Frog did make $500 million at the Box Office, that would not automatically make it a classic. In fact if anything I think it would send the wrong meassge to the company. I honestly believe if they made higher quality films they would be much more successful finacially. Many reviews I have read from many film sites would agree with me that this was not the high quality film the executives made it out to be. It was just above average. I think Disney Animation has been loosing an audience based off the fact that they undermine their audience's intelligence. They fail to provide stories with inner-conflict, painful realisim, sympathetic circumstances, and a plotline that weaves all these aspects together. This what Pixar and all the great fillmmakers supply. This why they're at least respected.
Disney is no longer recieving this respect from critics and audiences because they fail to astound us with heatfelt stories that are honest and have great technique. They have placed doubt in our minds what they're talent is really capable of. They need to stop focusing on trends and stay alert to what an emotionally gripping story is. If they nailed that, we wouldn't need to be so critical and doubtful of their ability. They seem to look at it from all the wrong angles. If Repunzel is a wonderful film that is of the same caliber as Beauty and the Beast, they don't need to give a rip about the advertising. If it's an entertaining and moving story, it will appeal to all ages. I'm sensing they're heads arn't really in the game as it seems they're more concerned with only earning money as opposed to making quality films as they claim. The longer they play this cherade, the more pianful the blow will be when the audience dumps them altogether.

It's kinda like Finding Nemo. Finding Nemo was advertised an average amount from what I could remember, but it was world of mouth from EVERYBODY that saw it that got so many people to see it. I believe my entire town had seen it by the time it came out on DVD and that was because it was such a well made film.

Well, it didn't take long to change the name of this film. It will now be called "Tangled." I have a feeling this will only serve to confuse audiences.

Yeah. . .when I got a facebook message about it, I wasn't sure what they were talking about. They provide a picture and a summery of the film here www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?pid=3369110&id=23245476854

From what I've read, the name change is happening solely because they've gotten it in their heads that audiences are less interested in seeing a "princess" movie than anything to do with where the story sits at this point.

If the article has any accuracy to it, Disney is in fact not concentrating on the right piece. Changing the title really has nothing to do with the fact that audiences have turned away from their animation department (Traditional or Computer Animation) If Disney honestly expects a bigger turn-out or more respect from film critics just because of a simple title change, they really have gone downhill. I don't know what else to say other then they're really walking on thin ice. It's just a matter of time before it cracks.

Audiences left Disney animation because of the first half of this decade. Lackluster at best to disappointing at worst feature films left audiences and fans longing for the good old days. Even though they've rebounded in the past few years with better films, they've yet to win audiences back. Changing the name of this film will do nothing to convince people to see it. If anything it will confuse them and that will be worse than any alleged backlash by perception that they're now in the chick flick market.

it is more confusing I think. honestly, it sounds more like a Pixar title than a Disney title just because I guess in general Disney films are named after the main character while Pixar does that a bit, but most of thier films are named more on themes or are catchy and fit. But like you said, in the end the title really doesn't matter at all, it is the quality and story line.

I think Entangled looks good but I have my doubts about the title. It sounds too much like Enchanted. To me it just seems like Disney is trying to attract the same kind of audience that was drawn to that film, and I'm really not for sure if that's a good idea or not.

In the Toy Story 3 thread, I made brief mention that the film I'm most looking forward to this year is Entangled, Rapunzel, or whatever Disney is calling it these days. Instead of sidetracking the TS3 thread, I thought I'd mention here why I'm most excited about Rapuznel.
Admittedly, we don't know much yet about the plot. We haven't seen a trailer yet either, but what has me excited about this film is the concept art I've seen. At least based on the concept art, plus some things I've read from Cal Arts students who have seen a lot more concept art than me, this film looks to be like something we've never seen before. And a lot of the art I've seen reminds me a great deal of concept art from the classic Disney films from Walt's era.
Does that mean Rapunzel will become a new classic? I don't know. It may well be that I walk out of Rapunzel disappointed because I don't like the story. But for now, based on the concept art, this film looks visually spectacular. I just hope the story is strong.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8-EEYLNVswAbove is the teaser trailer for what is now being called Tangled. This is because Disney feels the princess and the frog underperformed. they think its because boys were not interested in the film and so they decided not to call it rapunzel and are going to put a lager focus on Flynn, the boy character.

that is not the best teaser. it shows less then nothing! it has the concept art that we have already seen and just a few snip-bits of talking. Is it because they are still working on the look of this that they are slow to show us anything? I mean, if this is to come out next fall, they should be showing us more I would think.
