Well, Tangled as finally been released in theatres. I enjoyed it immensely. I thought it had a really strong story, and the humor wasn't too "dumb" as I thought it would be. I thoroughly enjoyed Maximus as the dog/horse. Granted there was humor that was more contemporary or something out of a Dreamworks film, but it wasn't a ridiculous amount. I do think their use of the "cupid" was a little much - especially at the end. I think it was more creepy than cute. Ending with humor is great, but they should've used Maximus or Pascal. My favorite scene was during the song I See the Light. I thought it was very Disney-esque and reminded me of Can You Feel the Love Tonight from the Lion King. I thought that the score was lovely; however, the musical numbers were really weak. I've heard Mandy Moore sing and she can sing better than what I heard in the movie. She sounded stifled. I also will say that there are better singers out there even at her best but she has sounded better than how she sang in the movie. Donna Murphy might have hit all the right notes, but I think that Gothel needed a much richer voice for that sinister character and would've been much more effective. The songs themselves were weak. Alan Menken is a very talented person and he really disappointed me in this film. I think they either needed to improve the songs or drop them completely. As much as I love musical fairy tales, I don't think that this one needed it. In fact, it almost came as a shock to me every time they started singing. I See the Light would've been the only song I would keep - and I wouldn't have them actually sing it in the end like they did. Sung/Spoke those words would've worked fine in a non-musical. Going along with the musical numbers, I thought the part during I Have a Dream was the weakest part of the film. What I love about Beauty and the Beast during Gaston is that it is so easy to translate that on to the theatrical stage because they have choreographed it so well. I Have a Dream wasn't at all and wasn't even all that humorous either. Although I still wish that it was done in 2D, the animation was good. I've read a couple reviews criticizing that Tangled isn't for kids and the scariest Disney film yet. I think that's a little insane. As far as villians and imagery go, it's not very scary especially when you compare it to Cruella de Vil, Maleficent, Ursula or Scar. However, I do admit that Gothel's role must have been confusing to some younger kids. She's pretending to be a mom who loves her daughter - but she doesn't at all. I've also read that Rapunzel is a horrible role-model by running away against her mothers orders and being a rebellious teenager. Perhaps that is true, but how different is that from Ariel or Cinderella or Snow White (Dwarfs being the mother) or Pocahontas? Unfortunately, because Disney is a business, I know that box office sales are very important to the film. Luckily, the film is actually doing quiet well in that department. Harry Potter which opened just before Tangled, is still number one at the moment and (I believe) has a much larger fan base. Tangled is closely behind Harry Potter in the box office sales. It has even the second highest Thanksgiving sales, just behind Toy Story 2. I just hope that that means that they keep on working on their films and improving them. I think they've gotten better, but they do have a bit of a way to go.

I saw Tangled on Wednesday night and enjoyed the film immensely. I had concerns about this film when I saw the trailers, but upon seeing the film itself, it was exactly what I hoped for. Visually, this is one of the best films I've seen from Disney in years. There were some breathtaking visuals, which was exactly what I hoped for based off the concept art the company released.
Overall, I thought the songs were fine. I agree that they don't stand out, but to me it felt more like the films of Walt Disney's Golden Age with one or two standout songs instead of the full Broadway style musicals we've seen in the 2nd Golden Age.
I loved I've Got A Dream. It reminded me a little bit of "Gaston" because of the setting and the comedy. For me the defining moment came during I See The Light. The animation during that scene was breathtaking and the romantic atmosphere invoked memories of the ballroom scene in Beauty and the Beast and Can You Feel the Love Tonight.
There are mild scary elements in Tangled, but I think Dr. Facilier's demise in The Princess and the Frog was more frightening. Personally I wonder if those critics who complained the film was too scary have seen many Disney films made before 2000.
While I have enjoyed the recent Disney animated films beginning with Meet the Robinsons, I think Tangled is the best Disney animated film since 2000. It feels the most like the classics to me. I'm thrilled that it had a stellar box office opening, even exceeding Disney's expectations. They knew Harry Potter would do well, but for Tangled to open so strongly gives me hope that Disney is starting to reconnect with audiences again.

I absolutely loved "Tangled". I have to disagree that the music wasn't that strong. If it wasn't that strong, I wouldn't be singing the songs five days later. The last Disney full-length animated feature I did that with was "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". I will say "I've Got a Dream" was my least favorite, but I still love it. I do agree that the use of the "cupid" was pretty stupid and disturbing. Still, the animation was great. It probably would have been a tad better in 2D for me. We didn't see the 3D version with the glasses, though. We hate the way the glasses dulls the colors. But, my overall impression is that this film will be an instant Disney classic.

This is very diverse feedback. Thank for sharing your honest opinions. I can't say with all the plot spoilers and reviews I've read, that I'm eager to rush out and see it. (And my money is still Toy Story 3 for the Academy Award) There's still quite a few other films I'd rather spend my money on for the Cinema price well before this. On the other hand, I have been considering actually viewing in the theatre none the less. Initally I thought I would just place this in the rental catagory. However there is a spark there that is seducing me into viewing it on the big screen. And not just because of the animation. So as of right now I'll wait this one out. Spend my money on other films that look worth my immediate while. But I'll leave this one on the shelf as a reminder that it may be worth a glance before it leaves the Cinema.

Reviews I've heard from other Disney fans are pretty positive. Even those who share the same opinion as me about CGI animation >.> I hope this is released in New Zealand, just so there can be a chance for me to watch it in theatres.

I think that "I See The Light" ranks right up there with the "Once Upon A Dream" scene in the forest from Sleeping Beauty and the ballroom scene in Beauty and the Beast in terms of stunning animation in a film.
Honestly, don't trust the official trailers. They do not begin to do justice to how the film story itself plays out. In many cases, the actual scene from the film plays out very differently in the context of the film. The trailers may give it a DreamWorks feel, but the actual film plays out very much like a Disney film.

I'm not gonna lie; I've almost cried over not being able to see this film until another two weeks when I go home. I feel so strange hearing everybody talking about it and me STILL having to cover my ears, even if they basically just say it's great. I can't read all of the ^ reviews yet because I love seeing things without anyone else's opinions in my head, so I will be more thorough in the future . But BRP, if that scene reminds you of something in Sleeping Beauty AND Beauty and the Beast, I'm sure it's amazing! I can't waaiiiiiiit until I get to see this! I've already listened to the soundtrack on youtube and it sounds good to me! The previews do kind of lead on that it's more dreamworksy and kind of stupid, but whatever. I'm seeing it! Someone told me that this was going to be the last Disney movie that includes a princess because they simply aren't popular with the audiences anymore? I'm not sure if I agree with this if it is true. Just throwing it out there, though.

I think your opinion about CGI animation is the same as mine, and I loved the film. I think we're going to see it again some time this month. We normally don't go back a second time, if that tells you anything.

I saw this movie the day it came out and I do have to be honest I just didn't feel it. It didn't really feel like disney to me. Now it could have been because I wasn't in the right mood for it but still it just didn't appeal to me. Other then the horse. The songs didn't seem to be all the memorable to me at all. I might have to give this movie another watch when it's out on DVD but so far I just don't feel it.

I'm not sure if I agree with this if it is true. Just throwing it out there, though. Nobody outside of Disney is really sure what the fate of the fairy tale at the Disney Studios is. The Princess and the Frog underperformed at the box office and that's why it's believed that Disney changed the name and quite possibly the marketing of Tangled. There was an L.A. Times article claiming that Disney would not make any more fairy tales, which prompted Disney to reply that the article was misleading and that fairy tales are alive and well at the Disney Studios. It is true that Disney has no fairy tales in development at this time and shelved two fairy tale projects they were working on after The Princess and the Frog. Whether Tangled's success, which includes beating Harry Potter for this weekend's box office, changes that remains to be seen. Honestly, I just hope that Disney doesn't attribute Tangled's success to the CGI animation. I think Tangled is doing better than The Princess and the Frog because it's a better film.

I'm not going to say that CGI isn't pretty, it can produce gorgeous animation - such as parts in Tangled. However, traditional animation means a whole lot more to me than CGI and it's something that I automatically connect to a Disney Classic, so when it was something Tangled didn't do, I think it missed out on connecting as a Disney Classic to me - even though it is a terrific film. "I See the Light" gave me the chills, it was perfectly Disney, and it made me so happy - but I couldn't help but wonder what the lanterns would look like in traditional animation. I admit, I have a major bias, but I really hope they don't give up traditional animation. Disney is one of the only studios that can make great traditional animation, and it would be a shame if they stopped.

I think the CGI worked perfectly for Tangled. I don't think Rapunzel's hair would have worked as well in hand drawn animation. I love both hand drawn and CGI (when done right) animation. That said, I also don't want Disney to stop hand drawn animation.
What Tangled proves is that when Disney makes a great movie, audiences will see it. I hope they don't misinterpret Tangled's success as repudiation of hand drawn animation, but rather as proof that when you take the time to make a good movie, audiences will see it.
Tangled was in development for quite a while. They kept "delaying" it because something wasn't right or wasn't working. In taking the time to get it right, they made a good movie and are now seeing the rewards. The style of animation they choose is just a medium and some stories work better in hand drawn and some will work better in CGI.

Well, they could have done part in CGI and part in traditional animation, although not certain if that would work in just a feature of the character. But, I think it would. You know, like what they did with Silver in Treasure Planet. He was hand drawn, but his mechanical workings were CGI. They could have attempted Rapunzel in traditional, and her hair in CGI. Still, it did work well all in CGI.
