I'm very surprised there hasn't been a thread for this film yet. The Bear and the Bow will be Pixar's 13th animated feature film released in late 2011. It's the story of a princess who wishes to become an archer despite society's disapproval and outrage. So far the cast includes Reese Witherspoon, (I'm not sure why) Julie Walters, Billy Connolly, and Emma Thompson. It will be directed and written by Brenda Chapmen. (Director of the Prince of Egypt and assitant writer of Disney films through the 2nd Golden Era) John Lasseter of course will be the producer.
Besides one thing, I'm really looking forward to this. So what does everybody else think of this?

I've actually heard nothing of this till now. I really like the cast, except the part about Barbra Walters is a little weird. I think it will be really fun to see Pixar do a fairytale, and it also looks like my type of story, so I'm excited.

I have heard it mentioned, but I have not heard anything about it. It looks very different from other Pixar movies, and the story details right now are barely existant so it is hard to judge it, but it is intreging and I am interested in it.

I really like the idea of this film. Knowing Pixar's story procedures, I'm sure it will be witty and heartfelt. While I am indeed very happy they are making a film with a female as the protagonist, I was never unhappy before about not having women as a lead. Pixar has always made their supporting female characters strong-minded, independent, kind, and valiant. Look at Eve, Mrs. Incredible, Jessie the Cowgirl, Dory, Ellie, Sally. I'm sure this new character will be just as entertaining and admirable.
SpellWoven- Where did you hear Barbra Walters would be involved in this film? I didn't even know she was ever involved in films. And I haven't heard anything about that.

Um, somehow I read Julie Walters as Barbara Walters. I have no idea why. I just looked up Julie Walters, and I have to say I'm SHOCKED. I had no idea that Molly Weasley and Rosie were the same person.

(I'm not sure why) Julie Walters, Not sure why!? Julie Walters is regarded as a National Treasure over here in Britain haha she's an amazing talent! Educating Rita, Billy Elliot, Dinnerladies, her sketch show with Victoria Wood (a fine comedienne) Wood & Walters to name but a few I heard she'd be playing a witch of some form? I'm really looking forward to this and as Monsters Vs Alien proved, Reese Witherspoon has a really good voice for animation so I'd definitely agree she's a fantastic choice for a strong female lead. The rest of the cast I'm looking forward to hearing as well Walters, Emma Thompson and Billy Connolly!

I was referring to Reese Witherspoon when I said that Elliot. I'm well-aware what a phenomenal actress Julie Walters is. I was more then enthusiastic when I read she would be playing the evil witch. I'm almost positive she'll be excellent in this role! Ms. Witherspoon is a talented but at times overrated actress imo. I'm not angry about the choice, but I feel there could have been a better option. She can be on the borderline of irritating in some roles. Her exasperation and emphisis is a trademark I wish she would tone down. I've yet to see a performance from hers where she blew me away. (I wasn't too keen on her performance from Walk the Line. Felicity Huffman was robbed at the Academy Awards) I'm hoping she doesn't take the strong woman they have written in the script and portray her as a snob. I haven't seen Monsters. VS Aliens, but I have no desire to.

I do think that Pixar would not have case Witherspoon for the part if she wasn't exactly who they were looking for to play the part. They may cast famous celebrities as voice actors in their films, but only if that person is right for the role they want. Pixar probably could have gotten some incredibly famous and well recognized fashion designer to voice E in The Incredibles, but Brad Bird (the director) did it.

It's a matter of preception by that person though BRP. Creative Teams from all sorts of studios cast different actors for a variety of reasons. That doesn't mean all audience members are going to agree with it. I wasn't too pleased with the casting choice of Owen Wilson for Lightning McQueen. On the other hand I was overjoyed with the performance of Billy Crystal as Mike Wizoski. I had my my doubts on both of these actors providing voice work. One of them I thought did fantastic, the other was an enormous disapointment.
I'm not saying Reese will do horrible nor am I arguing she can't provide decent voice-work. I am saying based on her previous roles and what other fantasic actresses are out there, I would have been more content with a different choice.

Last, a random and Interesting note about Billy Crystal and Pixar. They originally approached him to voice Buzz Lightyear. But since Crystal had never heard of Pixar, he thought they were crazy and turned them down, later noting how much he regretted it when he saw what he had turned down. That said, Tim Allen was a perfect Buzz Lightyear and Crystal was brilliant as Mike Wazowski.

As a note on Edna Mode as well there, Lily Tomlin was actually originally brough in but when Bird showed her how he wanted she basically turned round and said well what do you need me for? But thats by the by! I always find it interesting how Dreamworks and Pixar always have similar themed films coming out fairly near each other or even at all to be honest. For example: A Bugs Life came out 1998, as did Antz Shark Tale came out a year after Finding Nemo but assuredly would have been in production at the same time as Nemo, and playing the same kinda genre of animated film Wall-E and Monsters Vs Aliens were both out last year, obviously none of them are very similar in plot but in overall setting and content, etc its interesting to note that the 2 biggest studios in CGI animation have had pretty similar choices in films they've put out. After seeing the recent trailer for Dreamworks' upcoming ow To Train Your Dragon and reading into The Bear and The Bow, it seems in terms of setting and aesthetics the twinning has struck again. I dunno, I mean they are pretty loose ties but, its interesting to look at!

I have heard about this movie a while ago. It sounds very different than any other Pixar movie, but hey, it's Pixar. It can't be bad...

You know, I have noticed that too, but I didn't think of it as those 2 companies, but more as what people are interested at the time. Just like at one time it seemed like ever movie was a pirate movie and then every movie was a period piece.

Some people don't think this twinning is an accident, including some Pixar execs.
