Since Paul Newman actually retired about a year and a half before his death, the writers likely had plans to accomodate his abscence from the sequel. I like your idea about the flashbacks though.

Ah right I didn't know that Interesting. I hope they go with the flashback option then. Surely they'll have to have Doc in some form...

:/ I am still not sure about this. Elijah finally just saw the first one and absolutely loved it! A sequel might not be a bad thing....we'll see i guess

Lassester obviously thinks it vouches for one =/ Personally, if Pixar were just looking at giving one of their films a sequel I would have liked to have seen a second Monsters Inc =/

the first movie was great and i think the movie doe not need a sequel. The first movie was different from the rest that's why it was great. The director made it unique.

As a note here I wonder what's going to happen to Doc Hudson in the sequel following Paul Newman's passing? I would hope he'd be written out in memory of him instead of having some secondary actor trying to achieve what Newman did with the character. Maybe have Obi Wan style flashbacks,thought-backs from Lightning hearing Doc's old sayings? We have no idea how much, if any, work Paul Newman did for Doc Hudson on Cars 2. Newman did say that Cars(the first one) would be his last film. They have some interesting story possibilities if they choose to have Doc Hudson die. I just don't see them recasting him unless they have someone who can sound like Newman and bring his presence to the role. That will be a very tall order.

The article I found on Newman and Jim Varney that I found... (I'll post it again in case you missed it) www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles/1599550/story.jhtmlLasseter actually states that he's not averse to recasting the role, shocking as that may sound and says that they'll have to see how the story goes with Doc Hudson. As another note, I completely forgot, George Carlin, voice of Fillmore the hippy camper van, died back in June and although his was a much smaller part, I have to say, to me his presence will also be sorely missed in Cars 2. But also, I think his role would be easily recast =/ Easier than Doc Hudson anyhow.

Here's the thing. They could recast the roles without being disrespectful to the actors who provided the voices. I'm not saying they should recast, just that they could if need be. If necessary, I think they could find a talented actor who can recreate the voice if they choose to go that route.
When Richard Harris died, they had to recast Dumbledore for the Harry Potter films.

Dumbledore had to be recast because it was an established franchise, through the books, and Warner Brothers had laid plans out to make films of all 7 books.
Cars is a much smaller franchise =/ Personally I hope they don't recast Doc Hudson. I think that by doing the voice actor is going to be doing more of an impersonation of an actor rather than creating character and owning the role =/ Hmmm, it's interesting.

In a way, Cars is an established franchise for Disney/Pixar, albeit with less stories told than Harry Potter. Nevertheless, Dumbledore was a key character to the story, so he had to be recast. I think that Doc Hudson was a very key character to the story told in Cars. Can they tell the story they wanted to without Doc Hudson? Or is his character an important part of what they're going to do in Cars 2? I think the answer to that question will tell us whether or not they are going to recast Doc Hudson's voice.

Personally I'm very much against any recasting of Doc Hudson. With the respect to the many actors who could have pulled him off, it's best to keep the memory of Paul Newman as opposed to reinventing him again. I think as Elliot said in an earlier post, they could retain flashbacks of some sort as a tribute to this lovely character and remakable actor. Same goes for George Carlin. (May the both rest in peace)
If any character needs to be recast... it should be Lightning McQueen! Sorry Owen Wilson fans but in my opinion he was very much the wrong choice. I thought he was by far the weakest cast member. Especially whenever Mcqeen and Doc Hudson had scenes together, his acting seemed pitiful. I didn't feel the connection at all with him and his character. I felt he was either just reading the script or he was repeating the same performance from a previous character. The emotions didn't seem true or honest whether he was being self-centered, frustrated, flirty or caring. Which I find very sad because overall Mcqueen is very good character, but he deserves a better performance. And Owen Wilson definetley doesn't live up to his characters. I recently saw "Marley and Me" and the dog had twice the emotional impact come off the screen then he could ever hope to bring. And I don't think he belongs in Pixtar material. John Lasseter, please recast Mcqueen by someone who is able to bring the emotional conection and spirit to him that feels heartfelt and fun. Not redundant and stiff like Own Wilson was.
Sorry for rambling.
