Currently, the platinum release for Beauty and the Beast is slated for 2009. I think they're starting to get ready to rerelease some of the first platinum DVDs because they usually only stay in the vault for a decade. And it's been close to a decade since this was released as a Special Edition.
Anyway, this is according to Ultimate Disney. Right now it's not certain...but UD feels comfortable sharing it, so I do, too.

Since a lot more people have DVD players than they did five years ago, this makes a lot of sense for Disney to re-release it. But 2009 is a long way off...I wonder why it's taking so long?

because they want to make us anticipate it for a long time!

They released it in 2002, so 7 years is basically the norm for Disney once they put something back in the vault. They use the vault as a way to build up demand for their films and release them to a new generation every few years.
As a side note, I suspect that we may also see them bring Sleeping Beauty out of the vault since 2009 will mark the 50th anniversary of that classic.

I saw Beauty and the Beast... and I totally freaked. I thought they were going to make another movie and ruin it. ._. But I'm really happy they're making a platinum release. Gives me a chance to get it on DVD.

I missed out on buying Beauty and the Beast when it was released a few years ago on DVD. I didn't have a DVD player at the time. Now that I have one I would love to replace my aging VHS tape. I'm looking forward to this being released.
