I think the best comment I heard was on the blu-ray documentary Beyond Beauty: The Making of Beauty and the Beast. One of the animators, I believe it was Nik Ranieri (Lumiere) said that as an animator, it's the film he would love to go back and fix the mistakes in, but as a fan, it's his favorite. And for what it's worth, Walt Disney thought that Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs had some scenes that needed fixing too.

Just read an interview with Alan Menken that made me very sad. Neither the 3-D presentation of this film will released into the US at the Cinema. Nor will the live-action film adaptation be in development. It's been officially canceled. In fact, any rumors that he had future projects planned with Disney have all been scrapped.

I predict that if The Lion King 3-D is a huge hit, Disney will revisit the idea of releasing Beauty and the Beast in 3-D in theaters.
And I'm actually relieved that the live action version has been cancelled. Maybe I'm too much of a purist, but I would like the animated Disney classics to remain animated only.

Then I guess it's fair to say I'm not a purist.
I honestly believe with the right creative team, it could have been a beautiful film. The same way how the Braodway classic The Phantom of the Opera was made into a wonderful film adaptation. What I love about the musical of BATB is how they were able to expand the character depth. Espeically with the Beast. His solo in the musical, (If I Can't Love Her) is one of the most heartwrenching songs I've heard in the last 20 years. The solos for Belle ( Home & A Change in Me) and Gaston (Me) add an extra layer of depth or color that I don't think the animated film was able to provide.

I agree with you about having the right creative team, but I guess I'm concerned that they'd choose the wrong creative team. We are talking about a company that was examining a remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in CGI animation.
