I always enjoy watching Mulan for a variety of reasons. Of course the music is great, but it is also refreshing to watch unique characters. To me, Mulan is the most responsible and self-less heroines there is, where she is able to do what she feels is the right thing without any prompting. She risks her life to save her father, which is truly honorable. I think Mulan is a great role model for girls (not that we should all go out to war pretending to be our dad's secret son), because she is very realistic and doesn't turn out to be a princess. Her life doesn't revolve around romance, which is sometimes unreasonable in other Disney films. I loved that Disney came out with this and made it into a musical, I felt it was well-worth it.

As a Star Trek fan, I thought it was so cool to see Sulu voice Mulan's father(and Mulan was a much better film than Atlantis which had Mr. Spock voicing the Atlantean King). Now that I've finished my geek out moment, on the film.
I like Mulan. I thought the story was strong, and the characters were quite enjoyable. Sometimes I wonder if this film helped Eddie Murphy find a new path in his career since he later on voiced Donkey in Shrek. I also like the Chinese stylization of the film. Now having said all that, I still don't own the film. I've had opportunities to buy it, but it doesn't quite connect with me on that level. I'm not really sure why as I think overall Mulan is a good film but for some reason I haven't afforded it classic status.

I thought George Takei did the voice of Mulan's ancestor?

I think he voiced her father too. Maybe he did both.

Maybe he did. But George Takei does have a very distictive voice and Mulan's father sounds very different.

Looks like my memory failed me. Takei was indeed first ancestor and that's it. I wonder why I thought he voiced her father.

Probably because he's so well-known that you expect him to have a more prominent role?

I've said this before, but Mulan is my favorite Disney heroine. She undergoes far more character growth than almost any other character does...only Beast changes more or maybe Stitch. She starts off as a clumsy, awkward girl and becomes a confident woman.

she does grow a lot. I think that is what makes her so memorable, she doesn't have just one lesson to learn or one obstacle to overcome, she has lots of them. One reason i liked this sequel was that they actually kept this up in it. She wasn't done learning, and they stayed true to her character and the original story.

This one is mainly for you Butters. Mulan celebrated it's 17th anniversary on June 19th. Congrats to the creative team! "My, my. What beautiful blossoms we have this year. But look, this one's late. And I'll bet that when it blooms. It will be the most beautiful of all." How poignant.
