Honestly, I'm glad that The Lego Movie didn't get a best animated feature nod. While an enjoyable enough movie, I don't believe it had the emotional depth or story of Dragon 2 or Big Hero 6 (the only nominees I've seen). Honestly, I wonder if The Lego Movie got more love because it was so much better than people expected whereas Dragon 2 had to deal with comparisons to the original and was unfairly saddled with studio expectations that only 3 animated films have ever reached.
It can be too easy to judge a sequel compared to its predecessor. Just because the predecessor was better doesn't mean that a sequel was terrible by any stretch of the imagination. Case in point Return of the Jedi vs. The Empire Strikes Back. Or Back to the Future II or III vs. Back to the Future.
Or should we all go back and declare that Toy Story was disappointing because it did not reach for the emotional depth that Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3 achieved? Dragon 2 deserves its honors. And I will have no problem if it wins. (I still believe that as enjoyable as Shrek was, the best animated feature Oscar should have gone to Monsters, Inc.) Dragon 2 is a great film. And my sentimentality would like the creative team to get some honors. They made a great film in 2010, but lost to the juggernaut known as Toy Story 3. None of that takes away from what they did then either.

I'm proud to report that How to Train Your Dragon 2 is the winner of five trophies from the Annie Awards. All to celebrate the magic of the beloved animation genre. This includes Best Picture, Best Music, Best Storyboarding, Best Editing and Best Direction. They even took home a specialized prize for the computer software. (Disney fans know of Dragon's director/writer Dean Deblois as the co-director of Lilo and Stitch with past Disney animator Chris Sanders) As in sticking by my belief in good sportmanship. I say congrats to The Lego Movie on their win for Best Writing. I admit I've put myself in a bubble to a certain degree in blocking out bashing of this movie since I admire and adore it so much. I did that with the original to. As such I have seen a massive rise in support for this movie from fans in hopes of an Academy award win from Tumblr that the original film didn't even have. I have seen numerous compliments about how this film created more tears in the second installment thanks to a pivotal and heartbreaking sequence. There was also a good dose of that from critic reviews (which I took the liberty of quoting on page 2) in shamelessly pointing out how the sequel surpassed it's predecessor. Here is what I do know and am very eager to implement in regards to this as opposed to The Lego Movie. An atmosphere was created for me that despite it's "this storyline has been written amply before" I never failed to be caught up in the moment. I can not say the same for The Lego Movie. I found the idea was better then in it's execution. HTTYD 2 serves it's purpose by using every aspect to it's advantage. Everything merges together seamlessly. Perhaps if I had read the script by itself and then decided to read what The Lego Movie hoped to accomplish maybe it would be better. But part of the joy and devastation of watching a film is using the world around it to make the story seem so fresh you forget about anything prior and just let it wash over you. The voice cast, music and of course the animation all serve to amplify a story that if had been only written as a novel that would not seem as emotionally riveting. Both films in the Dragon franchise have done this to me. While it can be easily argued there are a vast number of films in any genre that top them in what is viewed as psychologically or sociologically challenging to your perspective on life. I will say that in it's favor from me personally. I see small portions of life lessons that are left well enough to the imagination in a discussion after the film is finished. Plus I find it therapeutic. (yes you read that correctly) There is a great deal of myself in Hiccup. I see The Lego Movie as a film that was promoted as cool but lacks depth despite their effort in providing a life lesson. But to me it came up short. I was not transported as this franchise as done.

Double post It was a great run for this film in the award season. And unlike the last time with it's predecessor. There were wins to be celebrated. No worries for the creative team and fans. We have one more chance at that Oscar in four years time with the upcoming trilogy. Be that as it may. I will always LOVE this film with a PASSION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As for that "lovely" joke by Mr.Neil Patrick Harris about how "Some titles confuse me. Like How to Train Your Dragon 2. This title is basically admitting that the first film did an insufficient job of teaching people how to train their dragons." Dreamorks has an answer for that via twitter. "We kept the name because it sounded better then How to Train More Dragons." Can't argue with that.

Oh yea... Totally heard Neil's little joke. I giggled though... Was all in good fun. And Dreamworks reply was on key! Oh I'm not mad. I knew there would be a share roasting. And ironically Neil's joke does make sense for someone who is unfamilar with the storyline. But Dreamworks did do a tagline when this film was about premiere last June. "Training is over." There little nod that Hiccup and Toothless are about to become full fledged adults. I gotta point out dirctor/writer Dean Deblois as another form of true class. Mr.Sean Penn could use a good dose of it. He went on his twitter to address publically how proud he was of his collegues. Director's Don Hall and Chris Williams of Big Hero 6. Since he was actually nominated and lost and is demonstrating how a "good looser" really beahves. I have to tip my hat to him! My only wish is the camera would have zoomed in on his face while Big Hero 6 team made their way to thye stage. Why? I don't doubt for a second there would have been anything but a gigantic smile on his face for his friends way back from his univerity years. This industry tries to pin people against one another to at the veyr least create drama. But when you have people with integrity. You can't take that away from them no matter how hard it tries. And vice versa when Dean Deblois took home the Golden Globe award in January and how Chris and Don "playfully" teased him with the loss. All in good fun but never a an ounce of animosity.
