So the other night, I was browsing iTunes and on a whim decided to type Sleeping Beauty in the search box and see what came up. See I already own the soundtrack recording that Disney released for Sleeping Beauty, but this time I found something I'd never seen before.
For me, Mary Costa's amazing voice is what sets Aurora apart. While all of the princesses have incredible voices, there is something about Mary Costa's "too beautiful to be real" voice set against Tchaikovsky's music. Well, for the 1959 original soundtrack release for Sleeping Beauty, Walt Disney actually had Mary Costa rerecord her two signature songs in a studio. The film version was designed to blend in perfectly with the visuals and the sound system. For the soundtrack version, Disney really wanted to show off Mary Costa's voice.
So these two tracks, slightly different from what we've seen on the screen all these years really showcase the full splendor of Mary Costa's voice. Once Upon a Dream is especially beautiful as it really shows off the range and quality of her voice.
Both tracks are available on iTunes and I believe on Amazon as well. The way to be sure you're getting these specific tracks is to look for track names Blue Bird/I Wonder and Woodland Symphony/Once Upon a Dream. The album artwork is Aurora sleeping in a pink dress with Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty as the title.
Once I realized these were different versions than the ones I already had, I happily purchased just these 2 tracks as they do not require purchasing the entire album, which made little sense for me since I already own it.
