Esmeralda:I don't know if You can hear me Or if You're even there I don't know if You would listen To a gypsie's prayer Yes, I know I'm just an outcast I shouldn't speak to you Still I see Your face and wonder... Were You once an outcast too? God help the outcasts Hungry from birth Show them the mercy They don't find on earth God help my people We look to You still God help the outcasts Or nobody will Parishioners:I ask for wealth I ask for fame I ask for glory to shine on my name I ask for love I can posess I ask for God and His angels to bless me Esmeralda:I ask for nothing I can get by But I know so many Less lucky than I Please help my people The poor and downtrod I thought we all were The children of God God help the outcasts Children of God (Image Credit goes to disney-and-nondisney from tumblr)

So, I just wanted to start with one of my all-time favorite Disney songs. In fact, it's one of my all-time favorite songs fullstop. The entire song and the meaning behind is so raw and real that the moment this scene comes up, I have to stop what I'm doing and really listen to the song. Not only is it beautifully composed, but the animation itself is simply breath taking.
But let's take a moment and really dive into the lyrics, shall we? The first is so powerful, Esmeralda doesn't even want to be there but she has to dig deep and ask for help, even with her doubts. Then comes the spine tingling chorus. The vocals are so amazing during the chorus and it pretty much gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. I really enjoyed the interjection in the song too, it shows Esmeralda's plea is not taken in vain. The last verse is such a perfect ending to an amazing song. 'I ask for nothing I can get by But I know so many Less lucky than I' - This part in particular is so touching and shows how extremely humble and powerful she is!
Who else loves this song?

I believe this is one of the most beautiful songs in any Disney movie ever.
From the Christian tradition, I love the line where Esmerelda asks "were you once an outcast too?" There are many verses of scripture beloved by Christianity that speak of Christ as a man of sorrows and rejected by the world.

This song is really powerful. This is by far one of my favourite Disney songs as well. I often tear up when I watch this scene and listen to the lyrics in the song. Brilliant!

I often tear up when I watch this scene and listen to the lyrics in the song. Me too! I actually don't like listening to it often for fear of losing it's sentiment. I over-listen so many songs, and then I end up just not playing them and forgetting about them. I don't own the movie or the song, so it's always nice to hear at a random time, like if I see it as a related search on Youtube

Kawe- I agree 100%! That is also my favourite line. Esmerlda truly deserves the title of heroine as she is boh brave and selfless.

Why am I just discovering this thread? As I was reading the lyrics, I found myself singing the song and tearing up. It is by far one of the most moving, emotional songs that Disney has ever done. Kawe was right in saying that she didn't even want to be there in the first place, yet she was humble enough to ask for help and then stated that she understood if there was no help to offer her as there were those less fortunate than her. I cry each and every time I hear this song. Beautiful.

This is probably the most beautiful song from this movie. The lyrics are wonderful, it has a great message.
