I don't know if this will make people angry or happy but I still feel the need to say it.
With the critical and finacial success of the film adaptation Les Miserables. Many studios are reconsidering producing Musical films. Disney is no exception. Disney executives have said the "idea of going through with the idea of adapting the beloved animated film into a Live-Action piece (based on the Broadway Musical) is not out of the question." Alan Menken has not heard anything concrete but has said he would love to rejoin the team as the composer if the idea ever became official.
Nothing has else has been said. I still thought it was worth mentioning.

Wut.
I really don't know what to say actually. Is the stage version a big success? I guess this was the next step for them to milk out as much money as they can. The next being a tv series. Sorry to be so blunt, but sometimes things should be left alone. I'm not saying that it won't be great and I won't enjoy it, I'm just saying that some classics should stay classic.
Now, to the actual production, I think it'd be kind of cool if they did a modern day BatB. Sort of like how "10 Things I Hate About You" is a modern film of "Taming of the Shrew".

I'd actually really like to see something like this be made. I think they can do amazing things with CGI to make beast and all the enchanted objects. I think it would be wonderful if they made it in the same style as Alvin and the Chipmunks movie.

*cautiously optimistic*
I dunno, this could either be the best thing ever or a huge train wreck. I don't see there being a happy medium.

While I am aware of how easily this could turn out to be a giant mistake. I have more faith in this becuase it will based off the musical. It's not going to be like the new Sleeping Beauty movie where they are creating a whole new storyline. In the musical (Which ran for 13 successful years on Broadway) they expand the storyline without threatening the integrity of the orginal film. It's also worth mentioning that Linda Woolverton (who wrote the animated film's screenplay) also wrote the script for the musical. While they did have to find a new lyricist after Howard Ashmen passed away, Tim Rice (lyricist for Aladdin and The Lion King) proved to be the the saving grace Alan Menken was looking for. There are some wonderful songs that were added to the musical. What's even more important is how they made it flow seamlessly into the orginal score Alan and Howard wrote. If they find the right director, just how they were able ot do with The Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables. This could be an expectional film. And who knows? This could be the first live-action Disney film where all the actors sing live.

This idea has been rumored for a few years now and at one point was shelved. I'm one that thinks the idea is very high risk without much reward mostly because we're talking about adapting an animated film to a live action movie musical.
To me the greatest risk is casting live actors to recreate beloved roles from the animated movie. Belle will be compared to Paige O'Hara. Beast will be compared to Robby Benson. And one miscast could destroy the entire project. I think it's different from turning stage musicals such as Les Miserables into live action movies because many different performers have played Valjean and Javert, whereas even if you've seen a Broadway version of Beauty and the Beast, you will always think of Paige O'Hara as Belle.

Remember that this film is only rumored.
I personallythink that if you can't step back and appriciate a film (sequel, remake or adapatation) for it is. It is best not to go see it. If this film does happen, I will judge the actors for how they play the role s on their own accord. I have seen enough actors play these iconi roles on stage to respect what they do differenlty from the animated film performance wise.

You definitely raise some fair points. I had reservations about the Star Trek relaunch in 2009 with new actors playing younger versions of Kirk, Spock, and company, but I went to see the movie and I thought that film did a great job. I'm quite excited about the sequel coming out this year.
If they do it, they need to make sure that they do it right with set design, cinematography, etc. Too many times Disney has done something on the cheap figuring that the public will spend money on it simply because it's Disney.
In the end, I have a lot of questions about how they're going to approach the challenges of making this into a live action musical ala Les Miserables. And above all else, the Beast and the enchanted objects have to look like their characters and blend seamlessly with Belle. Will an audience buy human actors wearing gigantic candles or teacup costumes in a live action story? Broadway is one thing because we accept the "limitations" (and the Broadway costumes were great), but what about a live action telling?

BRP- Since nothing has been officially announced. There's no need to worry just yet. If the time ever comes, hopefully Disney will find the right creative team and cast. For now it's only an idea that's being passed around.

And that's the key. I'm not opposed to the idea. I just want them to do it right. And it's going to take some time before Disney has my full trust back given some of the ideas they've actually gone through with over the years. At least the martial arts version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is currently postponed indefinitely.

Apparently, it's going to be called Beast or The Beast. Which means it's going forward, right? I can't copy and paste links (I can't even remember where I read it) so feel free to post the link if anyone finds it

I think I may have found the article you were looking at Kawe. This doesn't seem legitimate though. It only implied that Disney would look into this project swince the success of Oz:The great and Powerful. Plus this is not what Alan Menken said he would do. He wants to create a film based on the Broadway msuical. Not a a "re-creation of the Fairy-tale" like what they did with Snow White and the Huntsman.
Disney would shooting themseslves in the foot if they went in that direction.

I am not too fond of the idea. I am part of the animation BatB generation, and I don't think seeing a live action version would be as magical.
However... I am with Butters. It will either be great or bust.

From what I've read and can understand it won't be a direct remake. The press release I read made reference to the forthcoming Maleficent and Wicked as what the film be akin to tonally, which I'm actually okay with.
When I first read the news, I was kind of horrified. But Hollywood currently has very little originality, if you look at statistics the vast majority of films these days, especially the blockbusters or bug budget films, are based on pre-existing films, stories, books, Tv shows, etc, sequels, remakes, prequels, blah blah blah galore! So it really doesn't surprise me, especially with the (quite random in my opinion) resurgence in fairy tale films. Last year for example we had 2 Snow White films, after how many years of not having a Snow White film? This year there are countless being made on Oz. There's an animated Dorothy of Oz with Lea Michele that is coming out fairly soon, not a big hitter but still, ANOTHER film based around Oz. 2 films in the same year, when the last one was Return to Oz in 93/94? If you look at it guys, these announcements shouldn't really come as a surprise anymore haha! Especially not after Maleficent was greenlit, that was like a greenlight to all of these sort of films beings remade.
Semi-rant over haha!. On the whole, I remain apprehensive about this. As Silver says, until more concrete details emerge I'll try to remain ambivalent to it all. I don't know honestly how Beauty and the Beast lends itself to live action, but we've seen stranger things, who would ever thought a person would end up playing the title role in King Kong? Hollywood is magic and will make it work. How remains to be seen...
