It wasn't really made to be a kids tale or a fairy tale though. Lewis Carrol made it to be a non-ficiton book, not a fairy tale - society now has just turned it into one. Its not dark at all by the standards of the time. And its still not very dark for this time.
[/blockquote][/quote] perhaps then, this version will bring it back to it's roots. Tim Burton is almost as quirky as Lewis Carroll so this seems like it will be a good match. I guess we will have to wait for the film to make our final decisions. Personally I am trying not to get my hopes up too high. I would hate to be disappointed in the end.

Ah yeah, I'd not noticed that!
I think Persephone actualy meant a plain fiction book.

Yeah that is what I thought that she maybe mis-typed and meant Fiction. Because card soldiers, talking flowers and disappearing cats are NOT non-fiction.

I actually think it was originally intended to be a satire. Wiki says the elements of the story were supposed to represent real elements int everyday live of the children the story was written for en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_in_Wonderland

Lewis Carrol actually did base the book on things he saw when he was on drugs. The character of Alice is based upon a 12 year old girl he had a questionable relationship with. Her name was Alice and he based the entire character off of her and their adventures to "Wonderland" This is something not usually noted in the stories about the books and Lewis Carrol.
As for the film I believe Tim Burton will do a beautiful job portraying the movie with the respect for Lewis Carrol and his work.
The released cast for the film also will make the film amazing

359 more days until the USA/Canada release.
I know, I was one of the people who was disappointed with pre-release pictures... But after seeing the final cast list, and finding out some other tasty tid-bits about it - my opinion has changed. I'm now quite looking forward to this release, though not quite as much as Depp's "Public Enemies".
The cast looks incredible: Regulars like Depp, Lee and Bonham Carter as well as ones who seem to be on their way to becoming regulars like Rickman and Spall. Anne Hathaway will be involved and it will NOT be Alice's initial trip to Wonderland. She is seventeen and does not fit in with society etc. It is rumoured that there will be a romantic relationship between the Hatter (played by Depp) and Alice (as played by Wasikowska). This will be partially live-action, partially CGI (for backgrounds and creatures such as the Catterpillar (being played by Rickman)).
(^Please correct me if I have any misinformation, I was doing this off the top of my head)
In a magazine there were some pictures released:

I'm looking forward to seeing this, it just looks so bizarre. I've always loved Tim Burton's stuff so this should be very interesting.

I personally love the girl who Burton chose to play Alice! I was hoping he wouldn't choose the girl who played Johanna in Sweeney Todd and luckely I was right! The girl is so sweet but yet seems as though she can show more emotion when needed

I personally love the girl who Burton chose to play Alice! I was hoping he wouldn't choose the girl who played Johanna in Sweeney Todd and luckely I was right! The girl is so sweet but yet seems as though she can show more emotion when needed I'm the type of person who either loves Tim's work or can't stand it. For a few examples I loved what he did with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory but was disgusted with how he butchered one of my favorite musicals- Sweeney Todd. I agree with you Chelsea that Jayne Wisener was not a very talented performer. So I'm relieved she's not playing Alice. I don't have much knowledge of about Mia Wasikowska but I look forward to her breakthrough performance. Hopefully she can fill this iconic character's shoes. I love the photos of the characters. The characters have the typical quirky air Tim loves. But they're immensley colorful and elaborate. A great mixure of a dark but inviting fantasy with historical ideas. I think this might qualify as one of Mr. Depp's biggest physical transformations! I think Anne Hathaway looks so beautiful but you feel the icy cold air surrounding her. This will be a very interesting film to say the least.

I am completely confident that this could well end up being the strangest film of 2010 given the combination of Burton and Alice in Wonderland's weirdness. I'm not sure if I want to see it or not.

I'm looking at the link SG just gave and I just have one thing to say: TWEEDLE-DUM AND TWEEDLE-DEE ARE NOT IN ALICE IN WONDERLAND! Why can't anyone get that right?
