I think the excitement for this for me, and this is in no way disrespect to any older or younger members, comes from the fact that this is one of the films that defines my childhood. In 1995, I was about 5/6 year olds and already loved Disney, but the original film and this cast of characters, particularly when you're a kid become like friends!
When I've been hearing talk about it at work and when I've talked about it to others, the people who seem to be the most excited about this film are the late teens, early 20's, the people who grew up with the film and the characters!

You're correct in a sense Elliot. Most of the people I know who are my age are very eager to see this film for all the reasons you've stated. It's a childhood story that has been memerable all this time. So to travel with the characters on this journey is like an enjoyable roller coaster you always have to come back to. B To be fair though I know of plenty adults who are also enthusiastic not only because of the original story. But because it's simply Pixar. Adults love Pixar for it's intelligence, craftsmentship, emotional vulnerability, and combining innocent and mature humor. Now that I think about it, the Toy Story franchise is probably one of teh beloved when it comes to humor amongst the Pixar group.
Despite this being a trilogy, I'm more excited for this then almost anyother animated film this year. (With the exception of How to Train Your Dragon) My critical nerves have finally settled down. Even though some of the plotlines have been used before, I'd put my trust in Pixar to stay on the same brilliant creative path. I'm almost positive they'll tug at my heartstings even if I don't cry. (Yes I cried a great deal at Up so the bar is set pretty high) Even so, I expect great entertainment value. Repunzel on the other hand I'm very worried about.

Aw, man, I didn't know that Randy Newman and Jim Varney had died. That's sad. Those guys will be missed, that's for sure! I always did like Slinky. I astually have real Slinky toy up in my room somewhere. But I'm glad that the new voice actor for Slinky sounds just like the old one! I hadn't even relized that the voice had been changed when I saw the trailer and I can usually tell when one of the voices of my favorite characters has been changed.
I'm looking foward to watching this movie with my mom. Toy Story is her favorite Pixar film.

Randy Newman hasn't died!? He did the music for The Princess and the Frog :s I do think they've done well with Slinky's voice actor though, pretty impressive.

quazie89- That's alright. You must of just heard an awful rumor. You scared me for a minute though. But I can firmly tell you Mr. Newman is in good health and currently working on the score for the sequel to Cars.

quazie89, I think you confused Randy Newman the composer of many Pixar films with Paul Newman the actor (and voice of Doc Hudson in Cars).
I completely understand the sentimental appeal of this film to those who grew up on these characters and the first two films. I felt that way when the Star Wars prequels were released since I grew up on those films. I am looking forward to it, and it is my most anticipated movie of the summer. I'm just not feeling my usual Pixar excitement (11 on a scale of 10, whereas TS3 is more like a 9 on a scale of 10) for this mostly because I'm not anticipating something unique and new ala WALL-E, Up, etc.

I think Briar Rose's Prince is right. I believe I got Paul Newman's name mixed up with Randy Newman's. Sorry about that.

quazie- It's fine. It was just a mistake. It happens. BRP- To a certain extent I understand where you're coming from. Since most audience memebers are familiar with the territory of this film's franchise, it doesn't feel as thrilling. Don't get me wrong, it's a new adventure for our beloved characters but we generally know the history and enviroment. With Up last year I felt really giddy and nervous because it was just coming off of the success of Wall-E. Yet I felt these huge emotional surprises in store. I tried to keep telling myself don't judge what you see from the trailer because most likley it won't be projected as you predict. Everything was refreshing and wonderful as Pixar kept throwing fantastic curvballs at us. Now Up has become my favorite Pixar film. This isn't to say Toyt Story 3 couldn't make my list, but something about the atmosphere from the trailer isn't ringing as powerfully. Not just because it's a trilogy, the plot I'm reading from the trailer alone doesn't seem as special or engrossing.

I think you touched on my feelings exactly. In recent years, Pixar has really gone in different directions with their stories so each new release has me wondering what will they do next. I'm not getting that sense with TS3 because it's a different story. It's not likely to be a new direction ala WALL-E, Up, or even Ratatouille, but more like revisiting old friends. The amateur animation historian in me isn't anticipating anything new and groundbreaking in TS3. At the same time, I am excited to see how they continue this story. I anticipate it will be good. And that's enough for me.

I don't know if anyone's been keeping updated with Empire's weekly reveals on the new characters but there looks to be some great new additions! So far we have: Lots-O'Huggin Bear voiced by Ned Beatty Buttercup voiced by Wall-E's Captain McCrea Jeff Garlin Trixie the Triceratops voiced by Kirsten Schaal Twitch (green bug man), voice actor unknown, probably a non-speaking role. Stretch voiced by Whoopi Goldberg Ken voiced by Michael Keaton Peas-in-a-Pod, voice actor currently unknown Sparks (robot), voice actor currently unknown There's many more still to be revealed. One that I know of is a headgehog called Mr Pricklepants, voiced by James Bong himself, Timothy Dalton. Exciting stuff!
