Based off the success of The Lion King 3-D release last month, the Walt Disney Company has announced plans to release 4 more films in 3-D. January 13, 2012 Beauty and the Beast Pixar's Finding Nemo September 2012 Pixar's Monsters, Inc. January 2013 The Little Mermaid September 2013 Disney Announces Future 3-D ReleasesPersonally, I'm excited about it. I'm in favor of seeing these films on the big screen again and loved seeing Beauty and the Beast in 3-D. While I haven't had a chance to see The Lion King yet, I hope to.

I hope this includes regular format along with the 3-D release. Whether Disney wants to acknowledge it or not. Part of the succes of The Lion King was due to the fact that some fans (including myself) just wanted to see it on the big screen again. They didn't want to pay extra or watch the film with sunglasses on their face. And they loved it just as much (if not more) then the interactive 3-D experinece. While I enjoyed the 3-D none the less. It was one of the more tasteful experiences I had with those glasses. The Lion King never needed that sort of update. People flocked to the theatre because it's a mature family film that is both entertaining and heartfelt. If 3-D was the only way they could expereince it, then they went with it. But Disney should never credit the 3-D conversion of it as the reason for it's finacial success. There is no doubt in my mind the film would have been just as popular if it had been in regular format to begin with.
Beauty and the Beast is arguably Disney's most beloved (maybe even animated) film to date. The only films I can think of off the top my head that have the same amount of critical acclaim, finacial success and cherished memories from a general audience is Toy Story and Mary Poppins. I can easily forsee this being more popular the The Lion King. Once again, it won't be because of the 3-D hype. It will be because audiences either want to revist it or watch it for the first time in the Cinema.

If Disney credits the 3-D conversion for the success, they've missed why audiences went to see the film in the first place. I drove to Los Angeles from Anaheim on a Friday morning, dealing with L.A. rush hour because I wanted to see Beauty and the Beast on a movie screen again. While I was curious about what effect the 3-D would have, that was not the driving factor.
If Disney were to release a not so beloved film in 3-D, it wouldn't have audiences flocking to it. I just hope that the success of this convinces them to release the Walt era classics again, though without the 3-D conversion.

Wall-E has been added to this list of 3-D re-releases. ( This one I will go see with the glasses)
Beauty and the Beast is too far away. I truly hope there is the option of viewing it in regular format just like The ion King was. It's been said (here and there) this is poised to be more successfull then TLK.

I'm with on the sceond part Kairi^^
I'll go see BatB and TLM regardless of whether the option to see it in regular format is available. (Though I would prefer the regular format option) I want memories as an adult watching these classic films in the Cinema.
When I saw The Lion King in 3-D, I liked. I did not love it. I imagine BatB and TLM would be very similar in how they've stylized it. Not terrible but you can clearly tell these films weren't meant to be in 3-D. It was something that was applied. That being said, I them credit for a valid effort.
I have no interest in Finding Nemo. (One of the few Pixar films I don't care for) I will go see Monsters Inc only if the option is available to watch it in regular format.
Wall-E on the other hand will be the exception. I think that film will look phenomenal in 3-D! To be honest, I'm surprised they didn't create it like that in the first place.

Having seen both TLK and Beauty and the Beast in 3-D, I was surprised to find that Beauty and the Beast was a better 3-D experience. Maybe my expectations for TLK in 3-D were too high based on what I had seen from BatB in 3-D, but for whatever reason, I really liked the 3-D better for BatB. I'll be interested to hear what others have to say since most will see the films 3-D versions in the opposite order that I did.

I'm not sure if people know this but here's an update on Monsters Inc in 3-D. The re-release date is now December 19th 2012 instead of January 18th 2013.
I've changed my mind on this. I'll go see it regardless of whteher it will paly in regular format or not. (Still prefer RF though)
The Little Mermaid is still set to re-released in September 2013. However there have been rumors that if Monsters Inc flops (Beaut and the Beast and Finding Nemo were not big hits finacially)Disney will pull the plug on that and any other future re-releases they had in mind.

I think the public is starting to burn out on 3-D. 3-D can really enhance a film experience if the movie itself was filmed in 3-D. But if the movie was not filmed in 3-D, you're really paying around $3-4 extra on top of your already expensive movie ticket for a gimmick that doesn't enhance the experience enough to merit the extra cost.
And given movie ticket prices today, it's insanely expensive for a family of 4 to go to one movie. I also think that Beauty and the Beast struggled in 3-D because it had been released on blu-ray a little over a year before. And Finding Nemo is coming to blu-ray this December. A family of four can pay in the ballpark of $40 to see the movie now or wait a few months and pay $24 to watch the movie whenever they feel like it.

I'll probably skip them all. I'm not a big fa of 3D movies - they normally result in me getting really sick and dying the rest of the night. :/ I remember seeing Up in 3D and it was the worst experience ever for me. If ideally wanna watch them I'll just pop them into the DVD player. ^^'
