I know it's rediculously early to start this thread up. I didn't think it would hurt though. Disney has confirmed TLK will be released on Blu-ray and DVD as part of the Diamond Collection. It will be in November of 2011.
Even though it's over a year away, how does everbody feel knowing this film will not only be released on DVD again? It will be officially apart of the Disney Special Edition line and it's first time on Blu-ray?

Well, it's been a very long time since they last released TLK on DVD, so it's definitely a good thing. I know that my youngest sister loves the film, but was too little to buy DVDs when it was last released so she'll be looking forward to this.
As always, I hope that Disney gives the film the right treatment. I'm encouraged by the improvement Disney has shown on the bonus features since releasing the classics on blu-ray. Too many times, the bonus features were heavy on games for the kiddies, and light on the process of creating the films and their impact on contemporary culture(see the modern classics) and overall film history(see the Walt era classics).
I just DO NOT WANT to see Fantasia delayed. I've been waiting a long time for that one. I'm a bit intrigued by the November release. They've usually gone with an October release, so I wonder why the change.

I'll probably get this. My old DVD got damaged, and I'm not sure if it even plays >_>

BRP- According to Wikipedia.com, Fantasia is scheduled to be released on December 7th as part of Diamond Collection. It will be on both Blu-ray and DVD. Where did you read it would be delayed and what release date did it say it would be?
As of right now Disney is performing the trend of releasing the Blu-ray in October while the 2-Disc DVD is released on November. I'm pretty sure TLK will have the same treatment.
I agree with you though about the extras on the last DVD. Too many features and games targeted at children rather then familes. It undermines the older audience's intelligence. I'm hoping they finally dispose of that wretched scene "Morning Report" as well. What an insult to the film! It works in the musical though. I'm also hoping the cretaive team will be less arragant and egotistical with their interviews on this one. On the last DVD it came across as a major turnoff. And if they're going to continue with the conemporary singers doing Disney song music videos, how about somebody who has artistic ability?! This film's DVD set requires alot of improvement from the last release in 2003.

December 7th of this year or next? Disney's coming soon previews on the blu-rays seem to indicate next spring, but after they flat out either delayed or cancelled the Dumbo blu-ray release (this past March), I don't trust any release dates even if they're from Disney. Given their recent obsession with deleted scenes, I suspect Morning Report will remain. And I agree that it didn't add anything to the film (unlike Human Again from BatB). As for someone with artistic ability doing the music video, I gave up on that a long time ago. And frankly, there's no excuse for anyone not named Elton John to do a music video of one of his songs. He is very talented, which I fear disqualifies him from doing the music video on the release

BRP- From what I read, Disney said this year. I guess we'll have to wait and find out.
Now I don't believe these songs belong to Elton John only. Afterall, he's not the greatest singer to ever live. There are many phenomenal singers from all sorts of genres working today who could do wonders with their own renditions of these classic Disney songs. The problem is the Disney company is only hiring the tacky bubble-gum poptarts from the Disney Channel. Instead of going outside the box and searching for a true musical artist, they insist on using mainstream pop singers who really not that talented. Now I'm not that great of a singer nor do I like to sound like I'm bragging. But I'm literally a better singer then Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and Hilary Duff combined. So if I shouldn't have a record deal, neither should they!
I think Bryan Adams, Brian McKnight, or ever Chris Daughtry would do a wonderful job with the song Circle of Life.
Does anybody know if Disney will be doing an actual Blu-ray/DVD combo pack for this Diamond collection? I'd really love to own both types of discs.

I will concede that there are other talented singers. I just think that it makes the most sense to have Elton John do any music videos. And it makes no sense to have anybody from the "Disney Channel" do a video instead of Elton John.
A quick search of Amazon revealed that nothing is available for Fantasia on blu-ray yet, so I think the December 7th date may be premature.
As for the blu-ray combo pack, I think Disney will be releasing combo packs for the foreseeable future. Not everybody has blu-ray yet, and even families who already have blu-ray still like the portability of the DVD that comes with the combo pack. Beginning with Sleeping Beauty (the first blu-ray and combo pack release), every Disney film has been released in a combo pack if you purchase the blu-ray.

I definately want this. My family owns the DVD from 2003, but I want a copy for myself when I move out of the house. I do really hope that they have it in the DVD/Blu-ray/digital copy packs again.

I recently read on Amazon.com that Beauty and the Beast will have a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack available. That gives me hope for all the films featured in the Diamond collection to have this special combination. Including The Lion King!
As BRP mentioned earlier, it's beneficial to have all of these discs in one package. My family has finally agreed to buy a Blu-ray player. We're going to be purchasing this Holiday season. But a DVD is still useful in it's own right. I still own my outdated portable DVD player which is great to use when traveling in the car or late nights when I want to watch a movie in my own room. I have faith Disney will pursue this with The Lion King as well. It would be a real treat to own my favorite film on a Combo pack.

So here's the latest information that was given on the Blu-ray release from Wikipedia.com.
There will be the typical 2 Disc Blu-ray/DVD package that will be released in October. (Specific date still not confirmed) No details have been given on the bonus features either. But rumor has it they will unfortunetly be very similar to the last DVD. (Disney if you do this, you will recieve a very long and angry letter from me!) As well as the 2 Disc Special Edition of the DVD.
Along with these releases they will be including a 4 disc package of Blu-ray in 3-D, Blu-ray in 2-D, Standard DVD & a Digital Copy. Disney will also be releasing a Boxed Set of The Lion King Trilogy. Which will include a 4 Disc combo pack of the orginal film plus a 2 Disc BD/DVD sets of the two direct-to-video sequels- The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride and The Lion King One and a Half.
The orginal film will be presented in 1.78:1 Wide-screen and 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio.

If Beauty and the Beast on blu-ray is a guide, TLK will have one spectacular bonus feature and some decent ones along with most of the original DVD bonus features on the 2nd disc. Honestly, the quality of the blu-ray bonus features is dropping. Plus they'll throw in a few games for the kiddies that hold very little value for the adults.

The official release date is out. October 4th for the Blu-ray, while the Special Edition will be November 15th.
Disney has also released the information on the Bonus Feature Material for the Blu-ray-
Never Before Seen Bloopers 4 Never Before Seen Deleted Scenes Deleted Song The Morning Report: Exteneded Scene (It doesn't need an extension, it needs to be terminated) Disney Second Screen Pride of the Lion King Documentry The Lion King: A Memoir by Don Hahn Disney Sing-Along Mode Interactive Blu-ray Galleries Audio Commentary Disney's Virtual Vault: Classic DVD Features Powered By BD-Live
Does sound better then the last DVD release. But it still seems Disney could have provided more features on the Blu-ray. If there's going to be all that storage spece, might as well use.

Agree on the storage space. I think that the Pride of the Lion King documentary should be excellent. I'm guessing that it will be based on the similar documentary on the Beauty and the Beast blu-ray, which was extensive and very insightful. I'm hoping that the Don Hahn TLK memoir will also be very good. I had the chance to meet him last year and attend what he termed a crash course in master animation. Very interesting.
