When I was at Disneyland last month, I stopped into the Disneyana store on Main Street and started perusing through the many books they have there. I've already bought and read some of those books, and others are on my list to read. Then I noticed an interesting title. The Art of the Disney Princess. Now, instead of this being a book about the art design of each Disney fairy tale, it is instead a book featuring a lot of paintings, sketches, and even photographs of how different artists envisioned their favorite princess or princesses. The foreward was written by Disney animator Glen Keane, the lead animator on Ariel in The Little Mermaid. It even features a sketch of Ariel by Glen. What's really interesting is how imaginative some of the artists got. One depicted Belle as a mech warrior princess, still in her yellow gown. Another depicted Snow White in The Haunted Mansion theme park attraction. Others did very stylized renditions of the princesses, including some lesser known princesses/heroines. Definitely off the beaten path, but as someone who manipulates photos to give Aurora a lightsaber, some of these pictures were right up my alley. Some artists chose to photograph live models dressed as a Disney princess, and some even used princess dolls in assorted locales. I think what I enjoyed the most was reading about how these films inspired the artists and seeing some of their personality infused into the drawings. Click below for an article by Jim Hill about the book that shows some of the artwork that made it in. The Art of the Disney Princess

Wow, I am totally impressed with all the paintings and artist renditions of the princesses. This book seems right up my alley. Since I started working at a book store I find myself in the Disney movie section all the time! And I'm so excited that you shared this find with us! I found it on my works website! I'm hoping that we sell it in store! I'm definitely going to have to look into this. As if I don't buy enough there as it is. =P
Does the book go into detail about each of the paintings and such or is it mostly just beautiful images?

A little bit of both. It always tells you the medium in which the painting was created. On some of them, they talk about the painting itself and on others the artists share their comments about their varied inspirations. And in some cases there's just the painting. The only "complaint" I have is that they didn't have something to share about each painting.
In my opinion, anyone who is a fan of the seven Disney fairy tales, especially the first 5, will likely enjoy this book. Obviously, it's princess focused, but the Evil Queen and Maleficent manage to "sneak" into the book. The artwork is quite cool.

I found this book right after Christmas and was added to my birthday list right away. I love looking at different interpretations of Disney, and have many favorites of such on Deviantart, and this just looked brilliant. I'm glad that you enjoy it BRP, definitely helps me decided if the twenty some dollars for this book is worth it.

It won't take you long to "read," but it's the kind of book that's really enjoyable to look through from time to time. The artwork ranges from fun to abstract to stunning.
