Don't know where to put this, because they're doing screenings of it, but it's not being released till April 2010.
I'm really excited for this. It's a documentary evolving on Disney animation from Sleeping Beauty to Beauty and the Beast. It sounds like they're focusing mostly of Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast. The tag line of the film is "From 1984 to 1994, a perfect storm of people and circumstances changed the face of animation forever."

From what I've read, Sleeping Beauty has almost nothing to do with this documentary. It's an odd title because it's focusing on an era in Disney Studios history that begins 25 years after Sleeping Beauty's release.

That's stupid. EDIT: Okay so I'm now thinking the title of Waking Sleeping Beauty might be Disney animation awaking since that film, or something. Here's an article of the film: showbiz411.blogs.thr.com/steven-spielberg-waking-sleeping-beauty/Looks like it's going to show a lot of the Disney Politics involved. I'm not a fan of politics, from any where.

I think the title stems from the fact that the most successful films in the rebirth period (1989-1994) all featured either fairy tale settings or romance. After Sleeping Beauty in 1959, Disney did not touch a fairy tale again until 1989's The Little Mermaid. Yes, they had some romance in some of the films, but it was not a key feature of them. Disney did have some very successful films after Sleeping Beauty, but until The Little Mermaid, none of them were fairy tales.
It's going to be interesting to see how this turns out. Many Disney fans already view Eisner in a very bad light, and this film isn't likely to change their minds. I initially thought this was going to be a documentary about reviving animation at Disney. Depending on how extracurricular this gets, it will be interesting to see how well it's received by fans.

I'm wondering if the title is a metaphor of some sort. Sleeping Beauty is obviously one of Disney most shimmering gems (If not the most) Howard Ashman himself said during the process of enter Disney's rebirth he wanted to be ambitious enough to create a film "That could sit comfortably under if not beside the Classic pieces Walt Disney himeself inspired. It's a difficult thing to try to do, but a wonderful thing try to do anyhow." So maybe the title is referring to the production process that has good technique and enjoyable stories for a variety of ages. In a sense Mr. Ashman was right. With the exception of Beauty and the Beast and some Pixar films I'm not sure I would rate the films from this era as top notch or legendary but they did make the studio proud. For example The Little Mermaid is the one that literally put Disney back on the map. It may not be as artisically astonishing or dramatically complex as the "True Disney Classics" but it stands tall and complete. The music was the highest quality of this time period. Plus the films mostly from (1989-1995) are ones that children to this day are enchanted by. I'm not sure if I'll see it yet though.

I noticed no ones posted here since October. A trailers been released and i'll post it down below. The movie is focusing on the 80's when things were looking bad for the studio. It shows how they made such a huge comeback, with people who were really there telling the story. The link will give you more information to www.worstpreviews.com/headline.php?id=16817

Thanks for providing the link to the trailer Cassie. I've been searching everywhere for it. I think looks fascinating. I've decided if it goes to the cheapest theatre, I'll pay to see it. If it goes to a more expensive facility then I'll pass and wait for DVD rental.

Well, it's playing about an hour from me, but there's no way I'll be able to see it. But I figured I'd be seeing it at home anyways.

Wow, this looks reallly cool! I''m really looking foward to watching this. I'm glad to see that both Tim Burton and Don Bluth are going to be in this documentary, which is coming to theaters first, right? For some reason I was thinking it was just going to be a straght to video release.

Looks like the theatrical release is very limited. The theater playing it near me is showing a lot of films I've never heard of. For most people, they probably won't get a chance to see it until it's released on DVD/Blu-ray.

My bf, who works as a manager of a theatre, had never even heard of the movie before I mentioned it. Looks like I'll be forced to wait for it on DVD.

Looks like the theatrical release is very limited. Oh, okay.It looks like it won't be coming around anywhere near here then. I'm fine with that, though. I like watching movies like this at home anyway so I'll try to look it for on DVD if they ever release it in that format. Thanks for the info!

I've talked to quite a few people who have seen this and they speak very highly of this documentary. It is indeed about the people behind the revival of Disney feature animation. If I remember correctly, the film is told entirely using "home video" footage shot by assorted animators at Disney from 1984 to 1994. I don't believe there are any modern interviews with the assorted people and personalities shown in this film.
It will be released on November 30, 2010. On the same day, two other highly touted Disney documentaries will be released. "Walt and El Grupo" about Walt and his animators 40s visit to South America which resulted in The Three Caballeros and Saludos Amigos and "The Boys" about legendary Disney songwriters Richard and Robert Sherman.
