For all the fans out there who have hoped Disney Channel would return to showing the classic films. Your wish is about to come true! Sort of. Disney has a marathon of some of the most beloved and popular recent animated films. Starting next Saturaday at 3:30 pm DC will begin airing Aladdin, Hercules, Mulan and Tarzan! So if you have the time, be sure to check it out! This is a one-time deal! ;D Sorry to those who read this and were hoping for the acclaimed films like Marry Poppins or Beauty and the Beast. Unfortunetley, Disney Channel isn't that gernerous. Maybe someday.

Disney rarely shows the most beloved classics on TV because they keep them in the vault. They want to create a reason for people to go out and buy the film when they release it from the vault. And to be honest, I like the fact that they don't air them on broadcast TV because of commercials and occasional improper formatting(seeing a true widescreen film in pan and scan loses a lot).

Yes I realize this. Almost nothing can top the experience of Blue-Ray. (Unless a film is ever at IMAX) But it's not because the films are kept in the vault. Aladdin as of early 2008 has been in the vault, however has been shown on Disney Channel a few times throughout that year. Mary Poppins has also been on ABC Family (but never on DC) well after it's 2004 DVD release. I don't think it's as much about keeping it contaiment as it is about it's impact with the audience. The films that were apart of this special broadcast on DC don't have nearly as much of a critical or devoted following. But are very well-liked in recent history. They performed respectfully at Box office and recieved good reviews. But have not (understandably) earned a place on the classic film list from audiences or critics. This is why it was put on Disney Channel but still had a special marathon. They are still popular films that people can enjoy, but don't have as much of a beloved reception like that of BatB. There are exceptions however. As I said earlier, Mary Poppins has been on ABC Family through-out the holidays the past few years. I'm very surprised considereing this is "arguably" the best film Disney created. So it is possible for acclaimed films to be featured on these channels depending on the occasion. And if recieved well, may start to be included in special programming on a yearly basis. For those who were excited about the marathon, I hope you were able to catch it. I'm sorry I couldn't answer about the international schedule. I honestly have no idea how that works. But I also hope it was featured to viewers in many other countries.

Disney actually just released a 45th anniversary edition of Mary Poppins on DVD (though not on blu-ray). It contains most of the same bonus material found on the 2004 release with some features being replaced by some new features about the Broadway adaptation of the story.
I think the films they are showing are decent enough films, but never managed to achieve classic status. In my opinion, Aladdin is the best of the bunch. In story terms, I think it's every bit the equal of the classics, but because the humor is so rooted in the pop culture of that time, it doesn't quite become an all time classic.
I like the others all well enough, but they just didn't connect with me. I will say that I'm glad Disney is starting to use terms like classic and masterpiece more judiciously. At one point they declared everything a classic. And as Syndrome put it, "when everyone is super, no one is super." At some point I would like to see Hercules and Tarzan again. I've only seen them once. I've seen Mulan a few times, but have never felt the urge to add it to my collection.

Over here in the UK, they're the only films that actually ever get shown on an all too regular basis, particularly Tarzan and Mulan.
We also get Mary Poppins and Cinderella 3 at least 4 times a week as well, these 6 pretty much make-up the Disney Cinemagic staple.
It's such a shame because there's so much variation.

I saw Treasure Planet on the Disney XD channel once but I haven't seen any of the other movies that you mentioned being on the regular Disney channel. Aw, man, I believe I missed them.

ABC used to show Disney movies every weekend. I haven't seen one in a long time. I remember watching all 3 POTC movies when they were on 3 weekends in a row.

To be honest I never cared for the ABC weekend showings. ^^ I always felt I was watching two hours worth of commercials instead of a movie. What I find even more irratating is they cut so many scenes outr of the movies, it makes it feel incomplete. At least on Disney Channel you get fewer comercials and the full movie in tact.

I nearly had a fit when they showed "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" a couple months ago, I think.
