This Jerry Bruckheimer-produced drama retells the story of the 1966 Texas Western College basketball team which surprised the nation with an all-black starting lineup, upset Kentucky, and won the NCAA Championship behind the strategies of coach Don Haskins (Josh Lucas, Sweet Home Alabama). Glory Road was directed by James Gartner; its cast includes Tatyana Ali ("The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air"), Derek Luke (Friday Night Lights, Antwone Fisher), and Jon Voight (Midnight Cowboy, National Treasure). The decade's three previous teamings of Bruckheimer and Walt Disney Pictures (Remember the Titans, Pirates of the Caribbean, National Treasure) have led to a mix of critical and, even more substantially, box office success. The trailer suggests that this film is especially in the mold of Titans, with its tinted nostalgic setting and prevalence of old pop tune hits. Originally intended for release in the fall of 2005, Glory was re-positioned in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend, with Disney hoping for the type of success that Paramount's fact-based high school drama Coach Carter found in the same opening a year earlier. Ben Affleck was first cast as Haskins, but backed out due to "scheduling conflicts."
