Wow! Disney remaking a classic! It will be very intresting to see how this turns out! This Walden/Disney production brings to life C.S. Lewis' classic fantasy novel series. Four London children, the Pevensie siblings, are sent to an elderly professor's country home for protection during World War II. There, they find a magical wardrobe which leads to a mystical land called Narnia, inhabited by beasts, fauns, dwarfs, and giants. Cursed by an evil witch, Narnia is subject to an eternal winter. With help from Aslan, Narnia's majestic lion, the children seek to defeat the witch and end the icy spell. After the world of moviegoers and film critics embraced the cinematic adaptations of The Lord of the Rings series, Disney is hoping for similar success here. Principal photography began in New Zealand last summer and production has recently wrapped, leaving nearly all of 2005 for post-production work that will bring the world of Narnia to life.
A decision to make sequels will hinge on the success of this film, but writers have already begun developing a script for Prince Caspian, the first follow-up. Meanwhile, the makers of Wardrobe have said their film will depart in a few ways from the novel. This will mostly consist of the film building upon scenes briefly covered in the text like the opening bombing of London and a climactic battle sequence.
Heading the cast is English actress Tilda Swinton, as the the evil White Witch. The film will co-star James McAvoy as the kindly half-man/half-goat Mr. Tumnus, Jim Broadbent as Professor Kirke, and James Cosmo as Father Christmas. Rupert Everett will voice The Fox, a Narnian ally to the Pevensie children, while Brian Cox shall provide the vocals for Aslan, the lion king. Andrew Adamson (Shrek) co-wrote the screenplay and directs
