That's awesome! Even though Sleeping Beauty isn't one of my favorites, I'd still love to see it on the big screen.
Too bad I live clear across the country. *grumble*

I think it's too bad that Disney has stopped re-releasing their classics on the big screen. We're really missing out on something.

I know *sigh* Watching a movie on the big screen is such a different experiance than seeing it on TV.

Especially for films literally designed for the big screen like Sleeping Beauty. Hearing Briar Rose's voice echo across the screen while she does not appear on the screen makes you feel exactly like Phillip did when he heard her voice for the first time. And I have no idea what to say about the dragon sequence. It is out of this world.

I've spent the last couple of nights perusing the bonus features on this new DVD and I've found many things worth noting.
First off, give Disney all the credit in the world for doing this right. Considering that they released this film on 2 disc DVD 5 years ago, they could have taken the easy way out and merely repackaged that release, but they were not content to rest on their laurels. In short, as a huge fan of this film, I am thrilled with the bonus features they chose to put on this DVD. A great majority of the bonus features on this DVD are new to this release. There's an incredible new audio commentary featuring Leonard Maltin, current Disney animator Andreas Deja, and John Lasseter(and to anyone who wonders why the wizard of CGI is doing commentary on a 2-D classic, just watch the commentary and you'll understand why Lasseter belongs on this commentary).
And this is the item that probably excites me the most. The overwhelming majority(probably over 90%) of the bonus features on this DVD are not aimed at kids. It doesn't mean that they won't enjoy some of the things, but this DVD is made for serious Disney fans. Frankly, if you love Disney animation and want to learn more about the process of creating an animated film, buy this release even if you already own the 2003 release.
As a final note, Disney is not lying when they say this release is brand new. The aspect ratio of this release is 2.55 to 1 whereas the standard widescreen release(including the 2003 release) is 2.35 to 1. Technirama 70, the ration in which Sleeping Beauty was made is viewed entirely at the 2.55 to 1 aspect ratio.

I haven't watched it yet either. I am still wondering how it compares to the 2003 release? The bonus features seem awesome, but what does it not have that the 2003 version have in bonus features?

A brand new audio commentary that is completely different from the 2003 commentary, a brand new making of featurette that is considerably longer than the 2003 making of featurette. A new featurette about artist Eyvind Earle, who designed the background of the film, some deleted songs and storyboards showing what those scenes were projected to be. There's also a feature about the original Sleeping Beauty Castle walkthrough at Disneyland that was not on the 2003 release.
They also have two different "fun" tracks for the film itself in addition to the regular version. And I did get a glimpse of the blu-ray in August and it is absolutely gorgeous.
I thought the 2003 release was excellent. I think the 2008 release is even better.

I just found out today that this movie will be airing on Friday over here... I might record the commercial-less rerun on sunday... but I'm not quite sure yet. I have the VHS and I didn't like this movie that well...
Even though I have to agree with Prince Phillip (like hey, he's got a NAME XD) and Maleficent here (Dragon form = awesome btw) and the fact that I liked how Maleficient imprisoned him (lol prince = threat xD), I find there are so much better Disney Movies... The whole style of this movie as far as I remember it was really antiquated, fitting actually, but it's just not my taste. It's kinda so much... clichee... Aurora looks more than a Barbie than an actual real human, and then a teenage, no thank you... Also the songs didn't really get me... non of them.
Anyway, have you noticed that Aurora is like... the only human disney princess that still has a mother that isn't the heroine of some prequel? Simba has Sarabi, but they're lions. Mulan has Li AND still a Grandmother, but technically Mulan isn't a princess, even if Disney often says so. Other Mothers are just... well... heroines who get kids in sequels... Nala and Kiara, Ariel and Melody, yadda yadda...

it was awesome! the colors are restored really well! it looks great! It includes the original short film about the Grand Canyon on the first disc. It also has the option of displaying the lyrics of the songs onscreen while you are watching the movie, not that I need them since I know them all by heart.... I haven't had a chance to check the second disc yet

I'm the opposite. I still haven't seen the restored version on DVD yet. I did watch the audio commentary on disc 1, but otherwise I've been spending all my time on disc 2. It is really well done.
Admittedly I'm biased as this is my favorite Disney film, and ranks right up with The Empire Strikes Back for all time favorite film, but I think anyone who loves the Disney classics should buy this release because of all the information about how they made this film. The overwhelming majority of bonus features on this 2 disc set are more for fans of the company and the classic films. I've long lamented how Disney puts too much kid stuff on the discs and not enough historical interest stuff on the 2 disc sets, and I suspect that most people who buy this for the kiddies will be disappointed in the lack of kiddie material.
