Considering this movie is a sequel to a spin-off of Cars, I wasn't expecting much, but Planes: Fire and Rescue isn't half-bad and, personally, I enjoyed it more than either Cars movie (I haven't seen Planes yet, but since my nephew likes this movie, we'll probably be adding that to our collection)
The plot seemed a little contrived. Dusty is damaged and can't race anymore, so he leaves to become trained as a fire plane. It would be like a human with a heart condition becoming a fireman and somehow managing to hide it from everyone.
I liked the characters, especially Lil' Dipper and Blade Runner. Lil' Dipper is weird fangirl towards Dusty and it's pretty funny. A little creepy, but funny.
The climatic scenes were surprisingly intense and the animation of the forest fire is really well done.

I have no desire to see this film. And I bought it accidentally and returned it. However, if I have a son, I'll probably add it to my collection just because. Lol

Lol, I wouldn't have watched it either if it weren't for my nephew. It's not a cinematic masterpiece by any means, but it's enjoyable enough.

Like Planes before it, Fire and Rescue is quite good for what it actually is. Honestly, I think it's for little boys in the same vein that the Tinker Bell movies are for little girls. I watched 20 minutes of one of the Tinker Bell movies and quickly realized that it isn't my thing. But I don't think that it was poorly made or anything like that. I fully believe I could watch it with my niece if she wanted to. It's just not something that I'll watch on my own.
The Planes franchise is aimed at little boys, but unlike many children's movies designed to make money and nothing else, there's more than enough in the movie to keep adults entertained. I also like that these movies contain important and good messages about hard work, remaining true to your friends, and not forgetting where you came from.
My nephew adores both Cars and Planes. He'd watch them all day long if my sister let him. So while kids are being entertained, it's nice that there are some positive messages within these movies. And my sister enjoys the movies in appropriate doses.
I don't think Disney set out to make this in the same vein as their feature length theatrical releases. I think they viewed it as like the Tinker Bell movies, but something happened that convinced them to give these a theatrical release where it made a little bit of money and did what they wanted it to.

I think comparing them to the Tinkerbell movies make a lot of sense. IMO, Planes: Fire and Rescue is better than the Tinkerbell movies, but all in all, I much prefer the Tinkerbell franchise.
