Yeah, I was expecting March, since Tangled, Wreck It Ralph and Frozen all had March dvd releases. It's a good 2-3 weeks earlier than I expected.
Did it not do as well in theaters?

According to Box Office Mojo.com, the film has earned over $217 million domestically in North America. It's total for woldwide income so far is $456 million.
Keep in mind the film has not been released in all territories yet. I read on the website it is expected to premiere in both France and China next month. I imagine it will surpass the $500 million mark by the end of it's run in the Cinema.
Even if the box office ended here. I would hardly call it a flop.
Maybe in North America Disney was hoping to exceed over $300 million. As such are deciding to release the blu-ray/DVD early in hopes of gaining a profit while amist the Oscar buzz.

Silver, you are super knowledgeable... How much did it cost to make this film? They say that if a film brings in the box office double what it cost to make it, it was a success.

As much as I would love to pat myself on the back. That would be dishonest. All the credit must go to the person who created the site Box office mojo. According to the site itself. Big Hero 6 cost appoximately $165 million to make. So round up the world wide total and you have passed doubling it. I think Disney may have just secretly wished for Frozen's numbers to happen again. But we all know that was a once in a blue moon deal. They need to be grateful for what they have.

Well then they just need to get happy! It was a success. And you're correct, they wanted it to be as successful as Frozen... Nope... Not happening! Lol

I don't think Disney views this film as a flop. I think they're probably just fine with what it's earned at the box office.
For what it's worth, I decided to compare the box office numbers of Big Hero 6 to Pocahantas. Why those 2 films? They are both the first animated films released by Disney following a record breaking box office run that no one saw coming.
While Box Office Mojo does not have Pocahantas budget numbers, the domestic gross is $141 million. The worldwide numbers bring it to $346 million.
Big Hero 6 also has higher numbers than Wreck It Ralph even with final box office numbers still to be determined. It also did much better in the U.S. than How To Train Your Dragon 2 although I think the worldwide number will probably be going to Dragon 2. It also crushed its same month box office animated competitor Penguins of Madagascar.
None of the above is a commentary on which film is better, but rather a look at box office numbers. I don't think Disney considers Big Hero 6 a flop. Nor do I think they realistically expected Frozen numbers. In fact given the dearth of Frozen merchandise in stores until late last year, I don't think Disney expected Frozen to do what it did either. Ultimately, I think they're happy with what Big Hero 6 did. If not, then they better be prepared to live with a lot disappointment because films rarely do what Frozen did.
At the very least, Big Hero 6 will end up with similar numbers to Wreck It Ralph. And Disney isn't worried about that film's performance.

l read this week where Big Hero 6 is set to cross the $500 million box office mark world wide. It has a chance to top Beauty and the Beast in box office gross.
Suffice it to say, Disney isn't the least bit concerned about this film's box office.

Congratulations to every single creative team member of Big Hero 6! Now it's co-director Chris William's turn to boost to fellow nominee Dean Deblois that he has a gold statue to display in his trophy case. I hope they post some silly pics on their twitter.

So I finally got around to watching Big Hero 6 tonight, and I have to say I was highly impressed. I wi admit when I first saw the trailer, I was kind of hesitant. Didn't look like something up my alley and I figured it would be another Cars fiasco (we are all entitled to our opinions). But no! I am disappointed that I didn't go to theaters to see this magnificent film. I see now why it won best animated feature... And I was rooting for HTTYD 2!!
First of all, this movie made me cry. Any movie that makes me cry is a good movie in my book, because the filmmakers are doing their job: to make these relatable and to make you feel what the characters are feeling. And I cried at least twice!!
I also really loved how this film combined geographical elements of Tokyo and San Francisco (Hence the towns name San Fransokyo!). I personally could identify both elements throughout the film. I really admired the Japanese elements to the film... Unless you are watching a Hayao Miyazaki film, I feel you don't get much of that in a Disney film. Refreshing.
I LOVED the concept of this film. I loved the characters. The graphics were on point! I could gush all day about this movie!
