It's been a little while since I watched the movie, but I'm pretty sure he said cranky. I'll have to put on my DVD and see what it was as well.

Umm....... I must have purhased a faulty DVD then because I re-checked this scene. I kid you not that Naveen bluntly says "lowly".
Yet everybody else has the same cut as the Disney channel. How bizarre. :/

Hmm, quite curious. I just checked my DVD and the line is: "Hold on, I made that promise to a beautiful princess not a cranky waitr...why are those logs moving?" Where did you purchase your copy Silver? It's sounding to me like some form of bootleg or else there is a glitch in the audio of that scene which causes the word to be muddled and sound like another.

I swear on my life I do not own any bootlegs!
But I am the first to admit how strange my situation is. Obviously there is something very wrong with my DVD if I am the only one to encounter this "glitch".
When I first brought this up. I really thought the Disney channel had censored the dialougue. Although I had a feeling at first it was like a throwback to when John Smith insulted Pocahontas. Now I see this is a different matter entirely.
So evidently the line is "I made that promise to beautiful princess. Not a cranky waitress."

I thought it was lowly too, though. I need to clean my dvd again. I tried using a banana, but it didn't quite do the trick Sent from my GT-P3113 using proboards

Butters- I honestly remember when I viewed the film at the Cinema I gasped out loud because I recall vividly being struck by Naveen's words towards Tiana. I also remember trying to contain my fit of laughter when she slapped (off screen that is) him in the tree. "Keep your slimy self away from me!" I wanted to yell out at his charatcer "Serves you right you judgemental womanizing despicable spoiled brat!" My laughter was meant to hide my true feelings. I can't fathom having as much of a passionate reaction if he said "cranky". Not that it isn't an insult. But "lowly" is really below the belt even for Naveen.

I'm wagering though yours will say "cranky" too and I'm the one who ends up looking like an oddball.

It's been so long I've got no memory of such specifics at my theater viewing though it's possible that it was "lowly" in the theater release and was changed for the DVD but a few copies were missed. Like when occasionally you get an empty fortune cookie...or well I have. You could actually test this theory by viewing an online streaming of the film as they are often recorded in the theater since the point is to make films available to view from home before they are buyable. It's illegal yeah but people do it. If you'd like I can do it.
'Lowly' is actually an appropriate word for Naveen to use in the situation and reflects how 'womanizing' is not an accurate word to describe him. All he cared about was money, that's the only reason he was planning to marry. This makes it very clear that he looked down on those who aren't rich. Though I can understand their not wanting to take chances after it was difficult enough to make Tiana a black character without looking raciest.

Shenzi- I did just check the IMDB page in the quotes section. Which did include the line. It's offical he says cranky. However these quotes are usually put in after the film has been released on Blu-ray/DVD since this is fan based.
So your idea of Disney censoring it for the DVD due to bad press must be the explanation at hand. And I purchased a copy that went unedited.
I also read two other quotes that signifies Naveen was not intially a faithful partner. First quote by Tiana. "Thank you cause I figured out what your problem is to. Naveen- " I am too wonderful? (Gets smacked in the face with twig branch) Ouch!" Tiana- "No, you're a no-count philandering lazy bump on a log."
Naveen later says during his poor propsel attempt "You've had quite an influence on me. Which is amazing since I have dated thousands of women and....." (Tiana is glaring while he stutters trying to backtrack)
So womanizing was incorrect on my part. Yet it's no secret he was not going to be a faithful companion until Tiana came along and gave him a reality check. Nor would she have taken the time to stop and smell the roses if he hadn't come upon her life. I just thought that term that was used on my DVD was crossing the line considering how this was a delicate subject matter.
So I suppose cranky was put in to soften it up.

OK I totally forgot that Naveen had mentioned having dated several women but again he probably had his superficial standards which included that they needed to be rich whereas a womanizing man will go after any woman with boobs. Also I absolutely agree that he was probably unfaithful which he pretty much admitted in that line you quoted.
There is no denying that the term 'Lowly' is pretty offensive regardless of the context and when you have black people in the equation that's definitely pushing it. So it was a smart choice to change it.

There is no denying that the term 'Lowly' is pretty offensive regardless of the context and when you have black people in the equation that's definitely pushing it. So it was a smart choice to change it. I think for an official releationship for him to flaunt in public. I agree he'd only be seen with a woman of wealth and allurmemnt. However I just remembered something I nearly forgot despite all I was mentioning. Right atfer the snide remark he directs at Tiana. During the scene where Naveen grabs the vine Tiana reluctantly lowers to escape the alligators completley. He scampers up the tree atfer begging (I presume that is the first time it's happened to him) and out of shot of the camera. You can still hear the voices. He says "Well looks like we are going to be here awhile. So we might as well get comfortable." The last word is drawn out in a seductive tone. (And here I though Pirates of Caribbean was the only Disney film willing to venture that far) As indcated with the sound a someone slapping another. Tiana bursts with "Keep your slimy self away from me!" Evidently Naveen crosses some line that she felt the need to use self defence to set the record straight while they will be traveling together. Do not touch me ever! Apparently Naveen is willing to be on the prowl reagardless of her social status as along as it's in secret. All of this happens very quickly so most children may not register this. I on the other hand was surprised by the undertone of this particaular scene from G rated Disney film. If it were PG maybe I wouldn't be as shocked. (Shrugs shoulders)

The G rating sort of surprised me too with all the stuff they got under the radar in that movie. However, I don't think that as far as Naveen's womanizing was concerned that he really cared whether they had money or not. Remember they only ever mentioned that he needed to marry a rich woman. Nothing was ever said about whether or not he dated one. The fact that by that point (when they're in the swamp and Tiana slaps him) in the movie he had already tried at least three times to come on to Tiana and failed each time points to that. He doesn't care about her financial state as long as she's attractive and/or finds him attractive. There's also at the very beginning of the movie when she's gathering up dishes from the outside tables and Naveen happens to walk (or should it be dance?) past. He very obviously tries to make a pass at her and she just rolls her eyes and continues working, and he just shrugs his shoulders and keeps going. That says he doesn't care about keeping his relationships secret, either.
On the subject of when they were hiding in the tree stump, I think where he had tried to put his hands is up for debate. He could have tried to fondle her and it could have been as innocent as him trying to put his arm around her shoulder. Probably part of the reason they shot that scene the way they did. The kids can imagine that he tried to put his arm around her, and those of us with filthy minds (*raises hand*) can imagine otherwise. And both of us can still cheer for Tiana for putting her foot down about personal space and boundaries.
