Why is there no thread for this??!!!
First off, I just have to say that this was a beautifully hand drawn 2D film! Hand drawn just captures the magical essence of Disney!!!
I really love this twist on the fairy tale. Most fairy tales you have are based in a European country. But they brought this one to America and really captured the beauty and mystery of New Orleans. Tiana was a great character. I adore how she came from nothing and had such a strong drive and work ethic! The villain was awesome and matched the protagonists greatly. And I love the spin on the prince!
The music was great as well. I'm a big fan of Jazz and I loved how they incorporated that so much into the film. And Randy Newman is fantastic. Such simple music that captures everything.
How did everyone else feel about this film?

I'm pretty sure the original thread just got buried. I remember posting it in after seeing the movie in theaters.
I like this movie a lot. I love the message of balancing what matters in life and that hard work only matters if you also take time to enjoy it. I think it's a message a lot of people need.

About the only issue I took with this movie was the placement of Mardi Gras. It never happens in mid-April, which is when the movie is set. Other than that I liked everything about it.

Oh... Well... I did a search... Hmm...
I'm fully with you, Butters. That's why "Dig A Little Deeper" was my favorite hit. I love how when Mama asked her what she learned, Tiana said "I got to dig a little deeper... Work even harder to get what I want"! Lol! Totally not it at all, but that just goes to show how everyone perceives things differently!
And Jupiter... I was watching some of the bonus features and the Director/Creators said that their goal wasn't to totally recreate New Orleans, but to bring out the essence that is New Orleans. The good parts and the parts everyone knows and loves. Notice there also wasn't women showing off their breasts. Lol! But they also never said the timeframe the movie took place, minus the based the looks off of 1912. But they never said a month or season.

Actually, if you have the DVD or Blu-Ray, pause it at the beginning when you see Big Daddy (or maybe it's Lottie) in the car reading the newspaper. The date is on there. Conceivably, however, they could have set the date for Mardi Gras in February or March when it actually does take place and still been able to keep all the background settings they used in the movie. Spring actually sets in pretty early down here. By about the point in April they set the movie in the weather would already qualify as summer. And just a side note on them not showing women showing their breasts, the first reason for them not putting that in there is the most obvious. (Disney movie, duh......) But the second reason a lot of people don't know is that it's actually against the law in New Orleans (or anywhere else in Louisiana) to show your breasts or genitals in public, Mardi Gras or not. A lot of people wind up spending their Mardi Gras in jail because of that.

I was using that as an example. No need to "duh" me. I was just saying that they based it on New Orleans. It wasn't meant to be exact. And I apologize, but I didn't paid attention to the newspaper. Haha! Edit: My dad and husband are in law enforcement and they actually said it is only illegal to show your reproductive organs in public. Breast are not considered reproductive organs.

I hadn't meant any mean-spirtidness with my tone there. I apologize for that.
You have to actually go looking for the date on the newspaper. I wouldn't have known about it myself unless I hadn't read about it on another website.
It's illegal in New Orleans, though.

This is a wonderful film with a unique lead female. It was a very delicate process introducing an African American character into the Disney industry. As I recall reading about there were some elements which some accused of being raciest such as the original name of the female character, Maddie. Apparently it was a common chamber maid name in the time of slavery and thus received several complaints and by the early image I recall seeing wasn't Naveen intended to be white? Very risky. Anyone hear about the protests against the Cheerios commercial featuring an interracial couple? It's disgusting how idiotic and closed minded folks can be. Just the same there is some unsettling feelings about the fact that Naveen while African American is not an African prince. Maybe this isn't realistic but it is possible! This is however Disney and Jupiter pointed out that the behind the scenes features state that it wasn't their intention to have accurate portrayals.
The two characters ended up contrasting each other in a way that was interesting and strong; the workaholic vs. the goof off coming together at a happy medium in the end.
My favorite thing about this film though is Ray and the Evangeline concept. The ending moment when he joins her in the sky was just beautiful.
The Shadow Man is a great villain, one who allies himself with dark spirits was an amazing concept and his design was very eye catching. Then again I've come to be quite a fan of all things supernatural and blood magic.
One thing I've got to point out here though which is why I'm in this thread was how the Mama Odie character had reminded me of someone for some time and tonight I've nailed it. Suga Mama Proud of the Proud Family. The voice, the face, even the quirky personality, it's totally her! Though like Louie I too could have gone without the snake lip locking! XD

The creator of The Proud Family actually worked on this movie! He was the supervising animator of Dr. Facilier.

Nice, that's true he kind of had a Proud Family look about him as well.

It seems like each time I see this movie, I like it less and less. I wouldn't say I hate it or anything, but I remember loving it when I saw it in theaters and now it isn't anything I would watch on my own initiative. I still like the song Friends on the Other Side.

My opinion on this film remains literally the exact same when I saw it back in 2009. It didn't get better or worse.
I like to use the basic TV Guide rating system with movies. Four stars is excellent. Three stars is good. Two is average. One is poor.
This film recieved *** from me personally. I really liked it but didn't quite rank to the love mark. Something felt out of place slightly. Like the writing felt rushed. I felt sad at particaular moments but have never been able to shed legit tears. Which is what I was hoping for as time went by. Nor was there a belly laugh. On the other hand, I do enjoy it when it's on. I hardly feel like my time was wasted. And I admire Tiana as person.
But I do have one question for those who own the DVD?
When Tiana and Naveen are attempting to flee the predators in the swamp. The land on what they believe is a log. (Turns out to be an alligator's back) On my DVD Naveen insults Tiana with a retort of "I promised that to a princess. Not a lowly waitress."
When I watched it on Disney channel however last weekend. They replaced the term lowly with cranky.
Did Disney censor this?
