tv.yahoo.com/news/disney-channel-turns-villains-next-original-movie-descendants-203100166.htmlI'm not sure what to make of this project. In a nutshell, it appears to be about the offspring of Disney villains getting an opportunity to redeem themselves. Looks like it will place many of the companies most beloved heroes and villains from multiple films in the same time frame. In other words, Mulan is now a contemporary of Cruella De Vil. It will be directed by Kenny Ortega, who also directed the original Newsies and High School Musical.

Maybe I'm thinking too deep, but there are all sorts of timeline problems written all over this. For instance, Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast take place in very different times. Sleeping Beauty takes place in the 14th century and Beauty and the Beast takes place much later. And 101 Dalmatians takes place after Beauty and the Beast. And I think Mulan predates all those stories. Yet, this is going to make them all contemporaries.

That's .... weird. It would work if they were more distant descendants, but for them all to have children and be contemporaries, it would have to be AU. Which...sounds like fanfiction

Obviously, many of these stories have been retold and changed over the centuries as new storytellers added their own ideas and introduced their own tweaks into subsequent retellings. From my own research, as far as I can tell, Walt Disney added some entirely new elements to his own retelling of Sleeping Beauty. But since this story is clearly using the Disney animated films as its jumping off point, then I expect to see it honor the already established canon.
In other words, Aurora and Belle cannot be allies and friends in neighboring kingdoms since Aurora's story took place long before Belle's story and Belle drops hints that her favorite story is in fact Sleeping Beauty. And Mulan interacting with Cruella De Vil has serious time travel issues written all over it. Feudal China meets modern day (more or less) London.
Unless of course they explain it all away with a tear in the space time continuum.

Maybe it's a spinoff off Mickey's House of Mouse? But to be serious, I agree with you.

Though it's too early to pass judgement as an idea this does not impress me and I am in agreement regarding the timeline issues. It goes beyond that however. The article talks about the son of Belle giving the child of Cruella De Vil a chance, but 101 Dalmatians is set in London while Beauty and The Beast is set is France. What is a British child doing under French rule? England and France have in fact been bitter rivals since 1066. A French ruler shouldn't be granting grace to a Brit.
I'm sure there weren't friendships between every other country involved either.
It's not just the flaws however, the entire idea is just well...ridiculous. The whole school thing makes me think of 'The Emperor's New School' the also ridiculous spin off series of the 'Emperor's New Groove.' The fact that this film is labeled a comedy says it all.
I am interested in seeing trailers but don't expect to be drawn to the film.
When does she do this? If you are referring to the description she gives to the bookstore owner of the book she's already read twice it sounded more to me like she was describing her own story.

When does she do this? If you are referring to the description she gives to the bookstore owner of the book she's already read twice it sounded more to me like she was describing her own story. That is the scene. "Daring sword fights, magic spells, a prince in disguise" are all elements in Disney's Sleeping Beauty and there are no sword fights in Beauty and the Beast. In this scene, Belle sings about how she wants much more than this provincial life. The story she's describing at the beginning of the movie is a story that she would like to live, not the life she currently lives. Disney's Sleeping Beauty also has all of those elements: a daring sword fight, magic spells galore, and the heroine not knowing that the boy she meets in the forest is a prince until the end when he wakes her with a kiss. Furthermore, Beauty and the Beast takes place in France and Walt Disney credited the French version by Charles Perrault in the opening credits of Sleeping Beauty. And last, but not least, when Disney Imagineers built Maurice's cottage in new Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom, they chose one book to place in the home where Belle grew up: "La Belle au Bois Dormant" or the Sleeping Beauty. And the more I think about it, the more I like the hole in the space time continuum theory causing this to happen because how else can we explain all these characters and stories separated by centuries, possibly millennia, and geo-political issues suddenly living in the same time period?

Hm, to be honest there isn't quite enough info for me to judge. If this were a big budget disney movie and not the disney channel i'd be on board right away. Right now, I really like the concept since it is a little fanfictiony/ once upon a timeish so I'm actually very intrigued and willing to look past all the obvious continuity problems if the first trailers look good.

Though I do not know Sleeping Beauty well, I don't believe that the fact that she didn't know she was talking to a prince counts as his being in disguise. The daring sword fights and magic spells do fit however recall that she also sings "Here is when she meets prince charming, but she won't discover that it's him till chapter 3." Really, it takes only 3 chapters for Prince Phillip to get to Aurora and wake her? Of course that doesn't fit her own story either so yeah...I don't know, maybe they should have went with another chapter number.
In fact in the actual story it's not a prince who wakes her at all nor was it a magic spell which put her to sleep. The way I heard it anyway was that the King had raped her while she slept (no idea if the king being her father was solely Disney's touch or it this king was Phillip's father or what) and impregnated her with twins. When they were born one sucked her finger thus removing the splinter like object which had caused her eternal sleep.
I suppose within the Disney world their version IS the actual version though. Interesting revelation.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way, lol. I love that it could be a little "fanfictiony" and take on an AU. I have a feeling that it may take on a similar narrative as The House of Mouse, because you're all right when you say that the timelines don't agree. It could even be a sort of twist on Kingdom Hearts where the worlds collide, without having to explain timelines and such. Still need more information, but I am intrigued.

Looks like I wasn't paying attention the first time I read, so it's going to be live-action? This has certainly taken a turn for me, lol. Now I'm scared that it's going to be another Disney Channel show where the acting isn't up to par and the storylines are too corny. I mean, I do enjoy shows like That's So Raven and Austin and Ally, but I'm not sure whether this will turn out like those or not. I hope they do.

Sorry for the double post on this, but I saw yesterday that Kristin Chenoweth and Kathy Najimy were playing Maleficent and the Evil Queen. I'm sort of back on board with those two being villains, lol. This is definitely something I have to keep my eye on!
