Frozen

I saw Frozen Tuesday. I had heard a lot of mixed reviews, but I confess I went because of Elsa. Annddd the fact she's invaded the Rise of the Guardians fandom. So I saw it matinee on a weekday while my kids were at daycare(shameless mom goes to see Disney movie and leaves the kids out, oh my!)I did not do 3D, since my brain never does 3D right, but the beauty...They caught the glorious look of ice to a T. It was by far one of the most breathtaking films I've seen in a while. Plot and song-wise... Most of the songs weren't bad, I love Olaf's comic interlude there, it got me to chuckle a few times. Olaf himself was well handled, he didn't come off as marketing or pure comic relief, just as a cute little bit of the childhood that he was. The Scandanavian touch at the start, like Frozen Heart and later the chanting in Vuelie were stunning. Unfortunately, after that they went POP for most of the songs. With the exception of Let it Go, most of the rest bugged me. I was all set to listen to some lovely music with it's own ethnically touch, anddddd let down. Maybe that's why, but Do You Want to Build a Snowman? I didn't really like. I loved the FEELINGS behind the song, but not the song. I literally was sitting in the theater waiting for it to take off....and it never did, not for me at least. For the First Time in Forever has it's high points, but Love is an Open Door was just, blah. And it had nothing to do with the plot at that point, BTW. Speaking of which- {Spoiler}{Spoiler}So, I confess I read the plot on Wiki so I knew about Hans and thought someone had gotten it wrong right up until he gives that first nasty smirk. I literally wanted to throw a dagger thru the screen in the theater. WOW, I haven't gotten that intense a reaction out of myself in a movie for a while! However I was rooting for Kristoff from the first time he revealed that he was blonde. I have a thing for big blonde Scandinavians, so yeah, well played there character creation and development. *is embarrassed* Anna and her relationship with Elsa was cool. I'm a little tired of romance in movies to be honest. I AM a die-hard romantic, but it's getting a bit over done. So to see Disney starting to branch out with other forms of love(Brave anyone?)is a great feeling. Still, the romantic element is light and cute. But, I have a HUGE question that really NEVER got addressed, Where the heck did Elsa's powers come from? They mentioned it as a curse a couple of times at the beginning, but never really stated what made her different. That's a LOT of power she has, it HAS to come from somewhere. Maybe my writer just sees a plot-hole and wants it, but it feels odd to me. {Spoiler}I actually never questioned where Elsa got her powers. My mom brought it up hours after we left the theater and all I could come up with is that it's just...something that happens. The music was okay for me. I love Let It Go and For the First Time in Forever is pretty cute. But some of the songs feel...I don't know...awkward? The reprise of For the First Time in Forever is a good example. {Spoiler}The whole "Actually we're not" "What do you mean you're not?" "There's something you don't know" What do I not know?" bit feels out of place. Yeahhh, that's a good example of why I DIDN'T like some of the music, it feels like they forced a musical/dialogue combo that was NOT working.

I think the songs in Frozen were really hit or miss. Let It Go is good and In Summer is hysterically clever, but some of the other songs just didn't work. In many of Disney's animated musicals, I can make arguments for multiple songs within the same film as being the best, but I don't feel that way about Frozen. The only 2 I really remember are Let It Go and In Summer.

Apparently there were quite a few snubs at the Academy Awards this year. No need to fret Frozern fans. Frozen has earned a nomination for their respective categories. Best Animated Feature Film and Best Orginal Song: Let It Go. Congratulations Disney.

Also worth noting is that the charming Mickey Mouse short "Get A Horse" which was shown before Frozen was also nominated for best animated short. I'm hoping Disney wins that award two years in a row.

Per Disney's official Frozen website, Get a Horse will be one of the bonus features. Looks like there are some better bonus features on this than we've been getting recently. movies.disney.com/buy-frozen

That was super cute.
I'm not going to buy Frozen on Blu-ray immediatley. That will happen later down the road for me. I have other films in mind to save my money for.

Though I still have not seen the film because everyone I know has without me so it looks like I must wait for Netflix, I have listened to some of the songs on youtube and this apparently is supposed to be Kristen Bell: www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ3b34I7ZfwBut I am confused, this sounds like a child. She did not sound like that in the video I watched of her singing her Broadway role on some talk show. Then again I have said it before and I will once more, I am unfamiliar with her singing.
