Shenzi- I've never seen the film, but according to all the film websites it's a nature documentry Walt Disney had produced. It's supposed to follow the lives of a lion pride and what sort of encounters and adventures await them on the African plains. It's very similar to another documentry Walt Disney worked on- "Seal Island". I suppose you could say (based on the summery) it's the 50's equivialnt to what you would see on the Discovery Channel now with animal programming. Only back then, there was far more mystery and suspense because the knowledge of wildlife was a bit more scarce. But I'm sure it was just as passionate!
Joplin- "Loosley Based" is an excellent term to describe it as. From what I remember as young girl, the ride was as some have said "Similar to a Jurassic Park theme". Being as the animals tend to play more of an antagonist to the journey rather then make the story their journey.
Personally as of right now, this film just sounds like a mess waiting to spread. Leave the ride be. Well there's another tweak I have, but I'm not going into it. At least not yet.

Silver are you sure you're not talking about Earth? It follows three families: Elephants, Whales, and Polar Bears. It's a documentary based off of Walt's small nature episodes. It's being released on Earth Day. Knowing the documentary films are the most popular I would be surprised if they released two within a couple years. And the ride's based off of African Queen, not African Lion. The book must have been misinformed. True-Life Adventure, a film about lions, did influence it. I'm not sure why they're making this. The rest of the movies based on the films have been flops, and Pirates is a very special exception. I understand that they want to do that again but they're going to have to find something more original.

The African Lion was a True Life Adventures series documentary released in 1955 by Walt Disney. A Review of True Life Adventures The African Lion from 1955The new DisneyNature films, of which Earth is the first, are supposed to be in the spirit of Walt's True Life Adventures. Addressing the issue of what inspired the classic theme park attraction, Disneyland opened in 1955, the same year that The African Lion was released, so I believe that the attraction was based off The African Queen. My guess is that Birnbaum's WDW just made a mistake or something.
