I don't want anybody to take this the wrong way, but a film based solely on Barbossa would tell us just how popular POTC really is because without Sparrow and Will Turner we would find out how many people watched the movies because they liked piratey type stuff and not because they like Johnny Depp or Orlando Bloom. While not everybody fits that description, I would be curious to find out how many people do.

I, for one, definetly don't watch the movies for Johhny Depp. Jack Sparrow is an interesting character and all, but I don't get all fan-girly squee over him. Though this could be that my step-father looks like Jack Sparrow (not Johnny Depp, mind you, Jack Sparrow). He has long hair, similar facial features and always wears a bandanna. >_<
I watch the movies because pirates are awesome! Way more awesome than ninjas ¬_¬

i have to admit that Johnny Depp is part of the appeal for me, i would see one without him though because the pirates are more awesome than Ninja's!

I don't think a lot of people went solely to see Johnny Depp anyway. After all, Pirates is the movie that put Johnny into the eyes of all those "fan girls". I personally hate that word just because I've been called that countless times on another forum just simply for stating I was a Johnny Depp fan. Anyway, as I was saying, most Disney fans have heard of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, and were interested because of that. Before Pirates the only sort popular movies Johnny had done were Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissorhands, and Chocolat.
But maybe after seeing Curse of the Black Pearl, girls began to see Johnny just as an attractive guy so they became what many people call them, "fan girls". I personally think he's gorgeous, but I respect SO much as an actor. I mean he is known as being the most versatile of actors alive today. He's played some really different characters like a man with scissors, a cross dressing director, a mobster, a gypsy, and a pirate. There aren't many actors out there who can pull all that off with the pizazz Johnny does, IMO.
But anyway, that's me just rambling about Johnny. So sorry, the term "fan girl" seems to strike a nerve in me for some reason. Back to the whole Pirates thing though, I still stand firm saying they should leave it with the third. It might as well be turned into a TV series if they're going to start going into the lives of all the pirates. Although Barbossa could be an interesting one.

Oh you're quite right, Emily, there's a huge difference between a fan and a fan-girl. Fan-girl is often used in a negative manner, and usually indicates a lack of depth.

I hope that my earlier comments were not misunderstood. As I wrote them, I was thinking of the comic strip FoxTrot when Return of the King was released. Jason Fox could not wait for that movie, but neither could his sister Paige They both had the same identical feelings about the movie, yet Paige's were related completely to Orlando Bloom and Jason's were related completely to a geek out moment.
I have not seen very many(if any) Paige Fox type fans on this board. Most of the comments I have seen have more to do with Depp's acting and portrayal of Captain Jack than gushing over his looks. There is nothing wrong with liking Depp as an actor and liking his character even more because of his appeal.
Having seen all sorts of squee over Depp, I was curious as to what degree the squee element played in the film's success. Now, having said all that, I think that it is tremendous fun to watch an actor with Depp's talents and abilities chew up the scenery as such an over the top character. Too often we see tremendous actors like Johnny Depp or Geoffrey Rush only take roles that are very serious. It's so fun to see Depp and Rush(like Jack Nicholson in Batman before them) simply have fun with an over the top, larger than life character.
So, once again, I hope that my initial comments were properly understood and I apologize to anyone who may have taken them the wrong way.

I don't think anyone took them the wrong way BRP. It was pretty clear.
And yeah, Barbossa does have loads left to tell but I think it'd be a bad move to make a film based soley on him. The franchise has been built up around Cap'n Jack too much for the powers that be to completely turn it around. But it would be interesting yeah. They'd probably do it but Sparrow would have to be in there.

I think that its not just Johnny Depp that makes the film popular but the character its self. Lets say another guy with the same talent as Depp but ugly played him, I think the character would be just as loved because that character, you have to admit, is genius.

Should they do a 4th film, the storyline I favor if you would feature both Sparrow and Barbossa. I don't really care one way or another is other characters don't return.

If they do make a 4th they should just stick with the pirates. We already know what happens with Will and Elizabeth. Their story ended nicely.

Well Geofferey Rush has said from the end of POTC3 that he would return so that's never been an issue. A Sparrow/Barbossa based POTC will rock.
