At the D23 Expo in September, Disney Parks announced a major expansion of Fantasyland at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom park. The expansion will roughly double the size of the current Fantasyland. In order to make room for the expansion, Mickey's Toontown Fair will be removed, including Mickey and Minnie's houses. It is believed that Team Disney Orlando will create a new meet and greet area somewhere on Main Street USA for guests to meet Mickey and Minnie. The expansion is known to include the following: Dumbo the Flying Elephant will be moved over to the current location of Mickey's Toontown Fair where a second Dumbo ride will be installed in an effort to decrease the wait at one of the park's most popular attractions. While Goofy's Barnstormer is supposedly staying, there are many who think it will be rethemed to Casey Jr. Tinker Bell and her pixie friends will be getting a brand new attraction, which apparently includes a ride in addition to the meet and greet already there. Cinderella, Belle, and Princess Aurora will get elaborate new meet and greet areas where guests can help Cinderella get ready for the ball, celebrate Aurora's sweet 16 with the princess herself, and visit Belle in her father's cottage. There will also be two new dining areas, the Be Our Guest restaurant in the Beast's castle and Gaston's Tavern, heavily decorated with, you guessed it, antlers. The Magic Kingdom will also be getting a clone of Disney's California Adventure's The Little Mermaid ride. The entire expansion is expected to be finished in 2013. Magic Kingdom Fantasyland Expansion

I'm not sure what I think about this. I feel bad for Toontown and all of the original Disney characters though. I'm not really sure if Tink and Pixie Hollow really deserve their own attraction, but it's not a horrible idea. I am excited for the The Little Mermaid ride.

Honestly, Toontown Fair wasn't that great, especially when compared to Mickey's Toontown in Disneyland. Losing it for expansion is not a huge loss, especially if the MK gets a semi-respectable Fantasyland as part of the cost.
That said, I'm not sure how much this will really improve the Fantasyland. The new meet and greet areas sound like they'll be well executed, but I don't think guests who have no interest in seeing the princesses will care about this. Tink is very popular, but I question the decision to make a ride based off a direct to DVD release that again only appeals to one segment of the population.
The only real sure fire thing I see in all this is the Little Mermaid ride. The others may be well executed, but will they give people a reason to spend more time in Fantasyland?

Just a quick update here on the Fantasyland expansion at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom. Disney is now saying that Mickey and Minnie's homes will remain, but not in their current location since that real estate is being taken up by the expansion.

We have an update on this story. As part of the expansion, Snow White's Scary Adventures will close permanently and be replaced by Princess Fairytale Hall, a meet and greet for Disney Princesses such as Aurora, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Tiana, and others. To replace Snow White's Scary Adventures will be a new Seven Dwarfs Mine Train coaster type ride. Also, Goofy's Barnstormer will be renamed The Great Gooferini and rethemed to match the circus motif in that area since there will be 2 Dumbo rides there (both the same). The Be Our Guest restaurant and Belle meet and greet will are still part of the expansion as is Ariel's Adventures (The Little Mermaid dark ride), which will be a clone of the one opening in May 2011 at Disney California Adventure. For the time being, Tink and friends are no longer available for meet and greets in the Magic Kingdom, but are moving to Epcot. No idea on how permanent this new location is. I don't know much about WDW, but the fact that they are taking Snow White's ride and replacing it with a mine-like roller coaster seems insane. That's all I have to say about that.

It's getting mixed reaction from what I'm seeing. Honestly, there is no comparison between Fantasyland at Disneyland and the boxes housing rides that passes for Fantasyland at WDW. My understanding is that the 7 Dwarfs Mine Train is taking the place of the super elaborate Princess meet and greets for Aurora, Cinderella, and Belle only, and so in order to find a new place for the princess meet and greet, they're closing Snow White's Scary Adventures and replacing it with something that sounds like the Princess Fantasy Faire.

The Snow White Mine Ride looks pretty scary to be honest. It seems like it will be at the same level as Mount Everest rather than Big Thunder Mountain. When I was in Disney they were working on this ride and part of the park. It was really elaborate. Looks like there is going to be a lot related to Snow White in the New Fantasy Land.

I don't know about it being Expedition Everest level. I watched a virtual ride-through they made a while back, and it seemed like it'll be more similar to Big Thunder Mountain. I think they described it as a family type ride, too.
I'm very excited for this ride, but I will miss Snow White's Scary Adventures. That was one of my favorites.

From what I've read, the mine train coaster sounds like it will be more family friendly than Everest or even Big Thunder Mountain. It's one Snow White ride replacing another. Snow White's Scary Adventures lives on in its original home at Disneyland, so while it leaves the Magic Kingdom, it's not permanently gone.

Oh ok. I'm glad that the ride looks more tame. Makes for more fun the next time we visit. Can't wait for this ride expansion. When we were there last month we got a chance to see the mountain and the construction on the ride. It's HUGE!!

Glad to hear Snow White's Scary Adventures is in Disneyland. I've never been there, so I didn't know.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the rest of the expansion next September. I always love to see the detail Disney puts into everything.
