I couldn't really find a thread that was dedicated to the films of Hayao Miyazaki and his animation house, I could find a couple for a few of his more well known films (Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle) but not any of his others really. I just wondered who else was into them and if you are, what are your favourites, what are you least favourites and why do you enjoy his films? I personally am a huge fan, third only to my love of Disney and Marvel. I own all but 5 of his films at the minute. I find each film, regardless of the content, just a fantastic slice of Japanese culture, combined with the fantastic, fluid animation style and the astonishingly moving sound. Favourites of mine include (not that I particularly dislike any) Pom Poko, Porco Rosso, Only Yesterday and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. What do you guys think?

My neighbour Totoro is my fave <3 I love the cat bus! hehe To be honest, it's the only one I've seen all the way through so far. I have spirited away, howl's moving castle, kiki's delivery service and princess mononoke on DVD but have never sat down and watched them >.>

I've only seen Kiki's Delivery Service and Howl's Moving Castle. The last time saw Kiki's Delivery Service was awhile ago and I just remember that I liked it. Howl's Moving Castle, on the other hand, I enjoyed immensely. There were some parts that weren't very clear or I felt like I was still missing some information in the end, but it was so good. I actually went and bought the novel afterwards. I have read Castle in the Air as well, but I have not seen Castle in the Sky. I am not sure if the two are related at all or not.

I firmly 100% believe Studio Ghibli is one of finest film companies. It represents all that should matter to filmmakers and what audiences wish to see. They use the exact same philososphy that inspired the greatest creative minds in the film industry. It's about concieving a story that will bring joy and inspire those to step outside the box. As well as tell the psychoclogical realism and heartache that we unfortunatley hear so much about in the world today. Then they build a plausible script from it and create a film the connects all the dots. It then swirls in all the technical pieces to enhance the quality. Finally when it's finished, it should taste wonderful because all the ingrediants flow seamlessly together. This is what filmmaking should be all about and I applaud every creative memeber in this studio for staying true to thier values. The world may have changed a great deal since this studio was founded in 1985, but they're core beliefs haven't. This what audiences truly appriciate and this why they have remained so successfull. I don't mean by Box Office numbers or award recipients. I'm referring to those many film sights where I go to and read review after review and there's hardly anything but praise and respect for these films. That's the real deal!
Some of my favorite films are- Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Only Yesterday, Castle in the Sky, Whisper of the Heart, Porco Rosso, and Ponyo.
I still haven't had the oppertunity to see Grave of the Fireflies. (Please don't hurt me!) I swear I will! Afterall, when some of the most respected critics call it the "Schindler's List of Animation" I need to give at least one view.

I think from what I've read, things that he's said in interviews, etc, Miyazaki has got some fantastic philosophies on animation, but on film-making in general. It's all about sotry, but also breaking boundries, not in a way that's controversial, but in one that stays true to the story they initially set out to tell. You really do need to see Grave of The Fireflies too, definitely his harshest, most heartbreaking film to date but yet it seems to travel in a similar vein as Ghibli's other movies.

Wow, I have only heard of about half of those, and I have only seen Howl's Moving Castle. I really liked that, so I really want to see more. This thread is really making me want to watch them!

Totally unnecessary post, but I'd like to correct my first post: Ponyo is now my fave, not Totoro XDD It's such a cute film and the animation of the waves and Ponyo's mother was gorgeous.

I still need to see a lot of these, but I have seen now Princess Mononoke as well. I saw it in Japanese with English subtitles and when I looked up a clip in English later, the translation was really off from the subtitles! So Now if I am to watch any more of his films, it will definitely be in Japanese with English subtitles. I want to watch Howl's Moving Castle like that and see how different it is.
Although these are the only 2 Studio Ghibli films I have seen I have loved them both! I wanted to see Ponyo when it came out but I was the only one so I never saw it.

Just an update. I have seen Grave of the Fireflies awhile back since I last posted. Now I'm going to restrain myself from saying ever positive adjective I can summon just to avoid gushing. What I will say is I'm flaggergasted this wasn't nominated for Best Picture in 1988! In all honesty I think it should have won. And yes I have watched all of the nominees. This is Platinum or Diamond standard for the Animation world as far as storytelling and script writing goes. If at least five out of every ten people who see this film don't recieve heartache, the something is terribly wrong. This film is very much indeed the "Schindler's List of Animation"!

Sorry to double post but it's been awhile. I was wondering anybody knew when Studio Ghibli's newest film The Borrower Arrietty would be released in the United States? Or if it was going to be at all? It was recenly just released in Japan. July 7th I believe. There's already been buzz saying it could not only be a nominee for Best Animated film. I've heard they may have found the winner! Since I've recently become a big fan of this film company, I've been more eager to see their material in the theatre. Unforunatley most of their work tends to flop at the American Box office. Which is such a shame because these are truly wonderful films.

I actually went and bought the novel afterwards. I have read Castle in the Air as well, but I have not seen Castle in the Sky. I am not sure if the two are related at all or not. Castle in the Air is the sequel to Howl's Moving Castle. Castle in the Sky is unrelated. I have also ordered Howl's Moving Castle novel and am now just waiting for it to come. I have Castle in the Sky and Spirited Away on my Watch Over Break list, so hopefully I will actually watch them and be able to talk about them soon

Spirited Away is a spectacular film!^^
When it orginally came out in 2002, I didn't understand why it won the Oscar for Best Animated film. Now that I've grown older and wiser it makes perfect sense. The film is complicated, emotionally-driven, and represents the true nature of maturing into adulthood. This is the type of writing that should be featured more often in Disney films nowadays. A film that bares a harsh resemblence of reality but is conatined in a fantsy world.

I watched Spirited Away, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and Castle in the Sky.
I wasn't that big of a fan of Castle in the Sky, but I really loved the other too! I have to say I may have even liked Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind better then Spirited Away. I want to see them again. I also say snip-bits of some of the other films. Whisper of the Heart and The Borrower Arrietty look really really good too! I mean, so do the others, but they are all based around war, which in general isn't as interesting to me straight off the bat, but I am sure they are good too. And now that I have taken a class on Modern Japanese History, I might be able to get into them and understand them better.
