Prince Phillip is the only one who actually does anything to save the princess.
I am with BRP, i would really love for there to be more behind the scenes stuff on this one. The games don't thrill me, they are kind of corny. The deleted scenes, and the behind the scenes, and the history of animation stuff is what I enjoy.

Yay another movie to add to my collection! I still need to buy the 101 dalmations one though...and I agree with both of you guys! I mean I am always one with the games and stuff but listening to what they have to say about animation is always more interesting. I love watching those step by step things on how they draw and bring the character to life. And I usually only by the platinum edition DVDs just to see what will be in the special features since I already have the movie on VHS anyway. But I am really excited for this one and I will defetinly buy it when it comes out!

Is there anything that is really interesting on the other DVD release of this, that if they didn't have on this one, I would be missing and disappointed they didn't have? (does that make sense?)

I know, I got the aristocat's and I thought I'd see what the game was and it was sooooo cheesy! I laughed when I saw your comment because it made me think of that. The guy/introducer never shut up and he talked really slow! Lol. Anyway: I love Sleeping Beauty and I can't wait to get this on DVD. I hope it comes with deleted scenes and stuff because I love to see his concepts as well as the art gallerys. And I agree, Prince Phillip did work for his girl!

Is there anything that is really interesting on the other DVD release of this, that if they didn't have on this one, I would be missing and disappointed they didn't have? (does that make sense?) Without knowing just what the bonus features on the new release are, I will say that the features on the original release were outstanding. Disc 2 alone features a making of documentary, a short feature film about Tchaivkovsky that Disney released internationally to promote the film, and a rather extensive concept art gallery with commentary about some of the shots. I have a friend who worked on the film, and he told me that he spent a few days watching all the bonus features before he got to the film itself. There's a lot of features on the disc that discuss artwork outside of Sleeping Beauty, but feature artists who worked on the film. In all honesty, Disney has a lot of work to do to live up to what they released 5 years ago for this film. Disc 1 has audio commentary from Leonard Maltin, Andreas Deja, Mary Costa(Aurora's voice), and the directors of Pocahantas. If you want to learn a lot about the process of animation, it's well worth a listen. In short, I fear that the forthcoming release will be aimed more at the "princess set" instead of the animation set. While the 03 release does have games and such, it has a lot more depth on it's features than most films do. As far as I know there are not any deleted scenes from the film. There was a song that was cut from the film though. When the fairies are making the dress, there was a song composed for that sequence, but it was wisely cut from the film. It's not bad, but the sequence plays much better without the song. For those who care, it is found on the audio commentary of the 2003 release.

I think you can probably find that version as it is available on the secondary market through some of Amazon's secondary dealers. The bigger concern would be how they'll charge for it. Sometimes I've seen it go for around $60(or three times what it will cost in October)
Given that Disney is keeping quiet about what the bonus features will be for this, it won't surprise me if the only difference between this version and the 2003 release will be the words "Platinum Edition" and the different artwork on the cover. I also suspect the silly music video will be replaced by a new one featuring whatever random Disney Channel tween star they feel like promoting(please not Hannah Montana).
I think there's also a possibility that the new release will cause the prices to drop on the secondary market for the 2003 release. Chances are that only Disney aficianados really care about the bonus features, so the presence again on the primary market of the film may cause the secondary market prices to drop because the demand for the film won't be there.
I would wait and see what they do release on this platinum edition. It won't surprise me if the only difference is that they're calling this a 50th anniversary edition in name only, especially since the bonus features the first time out were much in line for a special release(and the film turned 45 years old in 2004, mere months after the October 2003 release).

Has anyone heard anymore about the special features for this? All I have seen is their normal line about "beautifully restored color and animation"

I've seen a few articles about some of the blu-ray features, but that's about it. The trick with the restored color is that they restored before the last DVD, so that's nothing new.
There are rumblings about the Sleeping Beauty Castle walkthrough re-opening at Disneyland(and only Disneyland since it has Sleeping Beauty Castle) and some of those indicate that the DVD will have an extra feature talking about the original castle walkthrough. Nothing is confimred though so I take the "sounds good, but seeing is believing" approach.
Frankly, I don't expect much different from the 2003 release. Although not platinum in name, it was certainly platinum in terms of bonus features and content. In fact I think it may be their best 2 disc release if only because it was loaded with bonus material that was more about the process behind creating the film instead of entertaining the kids(though it did have some kiddie features).

Well they always say that about the restoration, but when I look at my old VHS compared to the DVD's they haven't done that much to restore them. I can do more, bring out the colors and make it more realistic in about 5 seconds in photoshop that the visible, at least to me, differences they brag about.
The "before" images are always way crappier than what my VHS actually looks like too.

If your old VHS is from the late 90s, than it probably is the restored version they're talking about with this new release.

Funny things sometimes happen when they restore these films. In some cases the restoration actually ends up saving the movie because the film itself had nearly deteroriated to the point of no return.
Sometimes they also end up discovering that the colors they've been using for all these years are actually wrong(maybe this will help them discover that Aurora wears blue and Cinderella wears silver, so they can stop the pink nonsense and save it for a future princess). It's not uncommon for them to switch to a different shade after they clean up the original negatives.

I wish they would just stick with the original colors and let the classics be as they are, not as some new crap just marketed towards the 3-7 age group.
