A trailer for The Incredibles debuted in front of Finding Nemo, over seventeen months prior to the superhero film's release. Likewise, Cars was theatrically promoted before The Incredibles back in the fall of 2004, shortly before it was bumped to open nineteen months later. At the time of writing this, it's April 1, 2006, and Ratatouille, the eighth feature film from Pixar Animation Studios is scheduled to open in less than 15 months, on June 29, 2007. That makes the near-complete lack of information there is on this film fairly baffling. Part of the hush-hush can be attributed to the fact that this was long thought to be Pixar's first post-Disney production. But since Disney announced months ago plans to purchase Pixar, that puts this film under the Walt Disney Pictures banner like the award-winning blockbusters that have preceeded it. Disney investors recently were privvy to the debut of the Ratatouille teaser, which is to accompany Cars when it opens in two months. The rest of us have been left with fleeting crumbs from those who have seen it or somehow have sneaked information past Pixar's tight-lipped policies.
What do we know so far? Well, most sources seem to agree that this story is set in an elegant restaurant in Paris and centers on a rat named Ratatouille who lives there and digs haute cuisine. Beyond that, very little is clear. The Incredibles director Brad Bird is now said to be in the helm on this project, which was once under the supervision of Jan Pinkava (the writer/director of Pixar's Oscar-winning short "Geri's Game"). Pixar story man Bob Peterson (perhaps best known to audiences as the voice of Roz in Monsters, Inc.) is reportedly co-directing. The screenplay is widely attributed to Emily Cook and Kathy Greenberg, relative newcomers to the business. The only voice cast member classified as confirmed is "Everybody Loves Raymond" co-star Brad Garrett, who as the restaurant's chef would be holding his third Pixar film role, having voiced Dim in A Bug's Life and Bloat in Finding Nemo. Among those rumored to hold roles are Kate Beckinsale, Jimmy Fallon, Jeffrey Tambor, Harrison Ford, John Ratzenberger, Martin Short, Patrick Warburton, and Bill Fagerbakke. Could the negativity that has followed Cars talk around the Internet be contributing to Pixar's mum stance on this film? Or are they simply waiting for the ideal way to reveal details on a project bound to attract interest on the creators' track record alone? Either way, we should begin hearing more when Cars opens on June 9th.
